Temp sender location
Hey guys, where do you perfer to have your temp sender?? In your block or your thermostat housing?? I currently have mine in my block and a mechanic i was talking to said i need to move it to my t-stat housing?. Thats where i used to have it, but it seemed to me i would want to know the temp inside my block. Also how much of a temp difference is there between the 2??
and sorry if the poll dosent work, ive never done one and thought i would try!!

Re: Temp sender location
I think it works, I just voted and it showed up in the poll.
I figure if GM thought it should be in the block that is where I put it. I know some newer cars and trucks also had it in the water neck, but usually that was part of the smog equipment. I guess it would not hurt to run one in each place if a person wants to know what the temperature is in both places. Danny

Re: Temp sender location
My thoughts are in the block. Like you I tend to wonder about the effectiveness of it in the thermostat housing. The thermostat remains closed to the water in the engine untill it heats up enough to flush the hot water out of the engine. Then the water pump replace the hot water with the cooler water from the radiator via the bottom nipple of the radiator. What closes the thermostat is after the engine fills with the cooled water it starts running back into the top of the radiator, cooling the thermostat, witch then closes it. So it makes sence that the teprature of the water in the thermostat housing doesn't reflect the temprature of the water in the block. WES

Re: Temp sender location
210-220 is a little too warm. Mine runs around 190-195.

Re: Temp sender location
Intake would be my first choice, since that was the normal location for a long time. Second choice would be the head. I have never seen one in the block.

Re: Temp sender location
the head is the stock location on all V 8 gas motors in these trucks.
I would rather know if the engine was overheating, verses the temp of the coolant on the cool side of a stuck t-stat... but that's just me. |

Re: Temp sender location
I think the head is a more accurate measure of the internal engine temp, so that is where mine is.

I can't verify this as correct but a mechanic friend told me once that the best place is as close to cylinder #8 as possible as this is the warmest area in the engine. Just throwin' this out for discussion. LockDoc

Re: Temp sender location
Drivers side head for me. Temp switch for rad fan is next to the thermostat on my truck.
Most gm products I have delt with have had it here, or moreso in the same port on the pass head which then, as previously suggested , right next to the #8 cylinder. That would make sense as it should be hottest. Also, makes it convenient for wiring as it can join up with starter wires, heater control, coil, and any other accessory wires, you know gm considered that for easy assembly.

Re: Temp sender location
I have had a '67 Chevy C10, a '71 ElCamino SS, a '79 GMC K25, and now my '72 GMC C1500. All have had the sending unit in the forward hole in the cylinder head between #1 and #3 cylinders in SBC's. Factory wire harnesses went there too...
Even when I ran Autometer gauges in my Elky, I ran the sending unit in the same spot. Just to keep it fairly "original" looking. Gary
