The original build would be great if the truck was not complete swiss cheese. The cab actually has holes in the backside below the rear window. I guess the seam along the rear roofline opened up and water got in between the inner and outer layers of sheetmetal in the cab.

That brings up another question, do you think this bumper is something other than someone's homemade job. Could it be an army bumper? I wasn't sure about keeping it and thought it would just be like a boat anchor on the back nof the truck.
if you look at junyard johns bumper. that is what an army bumper will look like. pental hook and tie down cleveses for shipment on plane or ship.

What you bought was a M1009 Blazer...Had a few of these when I first came in, then the active component went to HMMWV's so fast that we turned in all our CUCV fleet....

There still around and being used until they die, then go to auction. Used to go to auction in sweet condition, now we are keeping them for more purposes.

I recently bought one too from Government Liquidation. Mine has 46,000 miles and the body is great. It runs great, and just needs the rear window regulator. The bumper numbers are visible on mine as well.

I hauled a in a wrecked '85 Suburban with a sweet running 6.2 with Banks Sidewinder Turbo set-up that's going on the Blazer.

Thanks!

I am a big fan of these engines. The first I can tell you is that the ecomomy is unmatched. In stock form, these things get 20 - 22 in town and 25 - 26 on the highway despite having no OD. A 350 with a Turbo 400 will get 12 mpg on a good day. The knock on them is that in stock form they are not very fast. They pull good, but run about like 305 in terms of power. A turbo really wakes them up. They are typically making around 200 - 220 HP and 400 - 440 ft lb TQ at the flywheel depending on the fuel setting, amount of boost (you can only go 10 psi or so without lowering compression) and injectors. I put over 150,000 miles on an '84 K10 with no turbo, and finallly sold the truck at 339,000 miles. The truck was worn out, the transmission gave up (for the second time) so I decided not to spend anymore money on it. The old 6.2 still purred like a kitten though. I also have a '91 C3500 with a service body, and I sold it running at 262,000 miles.

The biggest complaints is the stock glow plug controllers can be troublesome, and they can be hard starting in the winter if they are no working properly. I usually put a manual push button to increase the glow time in the winter and it does the trick. You do need self limiting glow plugs like AC Delco 60G's or Bosch Duraterms, but thats an $80 fix, so its no big deal. The other thing is people must realize that even with a turbo, they are never going to be 350HP and 650TQ monsters that the modern Duramax or Cummins are. The indirection injection design, high compression, and lightweight design just does not lend itself to that much power. Even with aluminum heads, the D Max's dry weight is 835 pounds compared to 655 pounds for the 6.2L. Of course the modern D Max or Cummins is not going to get the fuel mileage these will either.

Here's a clip from the military 6.2 when I first put it in my C-30. It is tuned to 10 psi, the fuel is turned up a little more it than a 1/4 turn, a custom 4" exhaust, and has marine injectors. It should be around 215HP and 440TQ according to other builds. I have it front a NP435 transmission, and it is a beast. It is plenty strong to pull anything I want to pull with it.

THEY SURE LOOK LIKE A VIABLE TRANSPLANT FOR THE POWER PLANT IN THESE OLD 67-72 TRUCKS. I'VE ALWAYS SAID YOU DRIVE TORQUE & SELL HORSEPOWER. IF I CAN GET ANYWHERES NEAR 22 MPH, I WILL BE THRILLED SH!TLESS AS IT'S ABOUT TWICE WHAT I'M GETTING NOW. ANY RECOMENDATIONS FOR A GOOD BOOK THAT GIVES YOU THE BASICS OF SMALL DIESEL ENGINES INNER WORKINGS FOR A NOVICE? I'VE BUILT QUITE A FEW SMALL BLOCKS & MORE THAN A COUPLE OF BIG BLOCKS, & HAVE A PRETTY GOOD PICTURE IN MY MIND HOW ALL THE PARTS WORK IN CONCERT WITH EACH OTHER. BUT WHEN IT COMES TO DIESELS... WELL WERE TALKING VIRGIN TERRITORY HERE. THANKS JOHN

I had a good book on them, but it burned in our house, fire and I do not remember the exact name of it. I'll try to track down what it was for you. Howver, if you can build a SBC, you can build one of these. The 6.2 is a 90* pushrod, overhead valve, 2 valve per cylinder V8 just like a SBC. The crank, rods, pistons, cam, lifters are all basically the same set-up as a SBC, except beefier. The rockers are shaft mounted instead of pedestal rockers and the cam is a hyd rolller, so it self adjusting if you have to change heads, gaskets, etc. That part is easiler than a SBC. There is no distributor, but there is a vacuum pump that mounts in the same location as a distributor in a SBC. The vac pump serves the same dual purpose as a distributor too, as it is driven by the cam and drives the oil pump. It even has a timing like much like SBC, except there is an extra gear that is driven by the cam gear that drives the injection pump. Instead of having a distributor and plugs it has the injectoion pump and injectors. On the SNC when the piston comes up, the plug fires and drives the piston (obviously, I know you know this). The only difference is that when the piston comes up on the 6.2, it gets a small squirt of diesel, and it ignites due to sheer compression. They even use the same 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 firing order, and the #1 piston a 6.2 is the same as the #1 piston on the SBC, and so forth. Since fuel is causing the ignition instead of spark, there is nothing but air going through intake. When you get it home, take off the air cleaner, and its nothing but a big ol honkin hole! There is no need for butterflies of venturies because of the IP controls idle, acceleration and everything in between, including the advance. These are mechanically injected, and are not computer controlled. They have very little electronics. It only takes one wire to actually run it. There's a fuel solenoid in the IP that is controlled by the switch, and when its energized, the engine runs and when its turned off the engine goes dead. The glow plugs are mounted below the injectors are only needed to heat the fuel in the pre combustion chambers of the heads to crank when cold. They simple need power to them for about 8 seconds the morning, and they'll crank right up everytime. They are truly super simple

I think i can do that... Thanks for the great explanation. Like i said.. I've never messed with diesels at all. Sounds like a good (read that easy) one to get my feet wet on. One question... Where do you hook up the tach.?? I HAVE A FEELING THAT I'M GOING TO LIKE THIS DIESEL THING. John

I'm like you, I never knew anything about diesels until I bought that '84 K10 that had one. I hads the misconception that these trucks had the Oldsmobile conversion diesels, and I had all intentions of putting a 350 in it if I didn't like the diesel. I found out that these were designed by Detroit Diesel and we a clean sheet design. After I started driving it, I couldn't get over the mileage I was getting. That truck had a 700R4 and 3.08's and it got nearly 30 mpg on the highway. I commuted 80 miles daily for years, getting better mileage than a small truck. I put an IP on it at around 200K and set of injectors about 230K (around $800 combined) and it was running strong when I sold it at 339K.

The tach hooks up to the alternator on these. You can buy a diesel specific tach from Autometer and others or can use a regular tach and get this converter from Dakota Digital: http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.c...rod/prd128.htm

These engines also sound great with a good set of mufflers like Flowmasters or similiar. They sound kinda like a BBC with diesel rattle!

Well if its still the way it was in the Army, it will have dual alts, 24volt system. Those glowplug systems were terrible for the M1009's, I can get you all the manuals for that truck if you like.

let me know.
