sending units.
i cant remember if i asked this before but who makes the MOST ACCURATE
fuel sending units for our rigs? I had my set from autobone (120bucks! a peice!) go "bad" withing two weeks of the warranty ending... i show "empty" on both tanks, but still have 10 gallons left after that point. grounds good, wirings almost all new (in dash also) etc etc.. pulling one shows intermittent readings from the 0-90 range.. ive even had issues with indication of a full tank... i hate these ones grrrr

Re: sending units.
I don't know the best brand, but please don't tell me you bought Spectra brand sending units, because those are what I put in my 83 about 3 months ago.
I got my Spectras from Rock Auto - about $77 for the pair. Delco are about $140-$170 each, but maybe you can get Delco from someplace like AC Direct cheaper. It turns out I did not need sending units, I needed a new fuel gauge, so I kept my old sending units to reinstall if these Spectra units go bad. The socks are weak but still present on the old sending units. Could it be that your fuel gauge is bad? The only sure fire way I know to check for this is to replace the gauge with a known good (new) one. I got a new gauge from Classic Parts for about $50. Good luck. |

Re: sending units.
no it's the sending units, i did a full dash/front clip rebuild.
im by no means infallible but the gauge is definatley correct. ive puled and tested the floats their resistance sucks... and the unit is blatantly cheaply made, it's my fault for buying them i was in a rush. BUT seeing how im annoyed and momma will give me an allowance soon i'll get new ones.. just want to be picky. p.s. im from tucson ! grew up at 22nd and kolb! woot!

Re: sending units.
If you google search "sending unit rebuild" online you will find a company that rebuilds sending units. You might email them and ask them which unit is best, or if they can sell you a better unit than typical made in China aftermarket. Good Luck.

Re: sending units.
The Spectra sending units I have do make the fuel gauge needle bounce more than the original units whenever I hit a bump or make a turn. But, for $77 vs. $300+ I will live with it - until they quit working completely - then I will try to put the old OE units back in.
