'64-'66 Chevy Truck power steering conversion
After doing several power steering conversions, I have fabricated a pair of inner and outer backing plates for the frame rails and mounting for the GM Saginaw power steering gear box. I had the backing plates lazer cut from 1/4" 304 stainless steel. The mounting hardware is Grade 8 bolts, nuts and washers.
The complete kit, including front & back backing plates, hardware and spacers, is $85.00, plus $6.00 packaging & shipping. This kit allows mounting of a '68-'86 GM Saginaw power steering gear box, to convert a '64-'66 Chevy truck from manual steering to power steering. This kit does not include the gear box, pump, hoses, belts or rag joint. Let me know if you are interested in one of these quality kits or need additional information. Re: '64-'66 Chevy Truck power steering conversion
Tony,
I am interested in this conversion. After mounting the steering box, what parts do I use for the drag link, tie rod ends ETC? I have a 64 Chevy stepside.

Thanks for the inquiry. Your factory suspension parts will work. You will need a GM Pitman arm that fits your power steering box. You can use a '68-'86 GM Saginaw power steering box and Pitman arm. You will also need a new rag joint that fits the splined shaft on you GM Saginaw power steering box. I hope this information is helpful and let me know if I can help you with one of these conversion kits or other 4-5-6 Chevy trucks parts in the future. |

Re: '64-'66 Chevy Truck power steering conversion
This kit is specific to the '64-'66 Chevy trucks, so I couldn't tell you if it will work on your '67. I believe power steering was available in '67, so you may not need the conversion kit, in order to bolt up a power steering gear box. You may try posting in the '67-'72 forum for some better input from the experts there.

I see you are in Sedalia, MO. I can do the conversion, if you want to bring the truck to my shop in Kansas City, KS. It is not that much different to do the conversion on a 4x4 than it is on a 2wd truck. |

Re: '64-'66 Chevy Truck power steering conversion
Thanks for the advice Tony. I currently have the truck stripped to the bare frame so I can’t get it to you, but I would like to visit your shop sometime. I’m going to be needing a lot of parts.

Re: '64-'66 Chevy Truck power steering conversion
Thanks for the prompt reply and it would be tough to bring it to my shop. I can show you a 4x4 conversion when you come to my shop. Take care and let me know if I can help you with anything. Good luck with your project...it looks like you have a great start.

Nice progress. My brother lives in Central Point, OR, so let me know if you need any parts...we have 8-10 trucks at his shop, that we use for parts and projects.

Re: '64-'66 Chevy Truck power steering conversion
Hey can you tell me what you use for power brakes as far as a power booster/master cylinder setup, right now I used a 79 chevy pu set up, all I had to do was lenghten the pushrod about 2" to get it to work but only two of the mounting bolts line up and that year setup had 6 bolts, two up real high that will never lineup to anything, two that line up perfect and two that will need to be drilled, thot I saw a bracket setup for mounting that made some year booster line up right? not sure if it was yours or not

Re: '64-'66 Chevy Truck power steering conversion
This kit is specific to the '63-'66 Chevy 1/2 ton K10 4x4 trucks. All four gear box holes fall in the center web of the frame rail. We just got a new shipment in from the lazer cutter, so we have these kits in stock.
