Chevy CST/10 door handle - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have a 69 Chevy CST/10 (350) and on the drivers side door, where you press the button in to open the door, its gone and pushed right in to the inside of the door, i can still see it but it wont come back out and has rotated some. How can this be fixed and cessed? Thanks in advance.

Most likely you are looking at needing a replacement door handle. When you remove the inside door panel you can access the outer handle which is held in place by two small threaded bolts. The outer handle has the thumb button with a shaft , spring and a plate. When you push on the outer thumb button you push the shaft in and the spring causes it to return as it bottoms by hitting the plate. The shaft pushes on a rotaing arm and plate that actuates the door release rod. Possibly the spring has broken but more likely the retaining crimps on the handle assy' itself snapped and the spring/ plate combination will not function without the resistance. If the crimps are broken my thoughts are you need a new or used outer handle. Have not found a good way to repair broken crimp tabs. Perhaps some one else has more or better info. Been a long time since I had to replace a outer handle, knock on wood. Outer handles can be had at your local salvage or are being re-produced. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Orinoco nc I have the new door handle with hardware and gasket and I have used door handels also just which ever way you want to go!I'll send you a PM!

Yup, I also had a handle on life, but mine broke off too!

First remove the handle by removing door panel and removing two nuts holding handle on.

Then make sure you have all the parts:
button with rod, small spring, flat metal plate with hole for rod to go thru. (You may have to feel around in bottom of door to find these.

)

The spring goes over the rod, then the flat plate (which is just to keep spring on) goes under the small tabs.
I was able to reuse my tabs when I fixed both doors on my truck.

If you can't reuse tabs: get some very small screws with nuts at any hardware store and a couple of hose clamps. Trim the end with the screw off of the clamps and drill holes in the handle and clamps to use the clamps to hold the plate on.

The world of trucks is totally new to me so i ma having t learn everything from scratch. Also being from England its a case of "whats a chevrolet". Currently i am also restoring a 1978 Datsun 280z (sweet car) and i also have the twin turbo version of the Nissan 300zx. (1995) but thanks for letting me join your forum and pick your brains. Jeff

did a bit of a redneck fix on it. Basically i drilled 4 holes in the side of the handle, (inside) and put 2 small lengths of copper wire thru then and basically twised them on untel they held the plate with the tabs on. Works better than the original.
