4wd trans in 2WD truck

Are the transmissions in a 4 wd truck different than a 2WD? I have seen a few engines and transmissions for 4wd trucks and wondered how they attach to the transfer case and whether I could just unhook the transfer case and use the engine and transmission.

Some of you might think it is a stupid question,but I have never done much with 4WD vehicles.

If the truck has a divorced transfer case, the transmission is the same as for 2WD, except for a plug where the speedo cable attaches. If the TC bolts to the tranny, the normal tail housing is replaced with an adaptor and the output shaft is different.

If you want to use a "real" 4WD tranny for 2WD, you will have to deal with two problems: Some of them don't have a rear seal, and for the ones that do, you will have to find a U-joint yoke or flange that fits the output shaft splines.

Now what you CAN do, weird as it sounds, is to keep the TC and just not run a front driveshaft.

I agree. I would also hook up the TC shifter so 4lo can be used.

My 4X4 has manual lock out hubs. Leaving the hubs unlocked (making it 2X only), and the TC in 4XLo, I can creep around the yard and not tear up the grass. I often have to haul water and use this method very often.
