Broken down, need diagnosis.

At first it seemed like any night leaving work, but at the light to leave it feels like my tranny slips out of gear and gives me a loud metal chinking noise in drive reverse or park if I give it gas. So I put it in neutral and coast back into my works parking lot, all the while with little clanks going on. With what little knowledge I do have I figured it was driveline related so I get a flashlight and get under the truck and find my "middle" U-joint is extremely loose and wobbles every which way. Did the U-joint Fail? Or is it naturally that way and I have broken something else? Ideas / suggestions gladly accepted!

Sure sounds like the u-joint failed, should not be a lot of play in it. I just had to replace the rear one on my '71.

It is not a real difficult job, but it is a lot easier if you have the right tools.

Re: Broken down, need diagnosis.

Upon further research I have found that the U-joint that I am speaking of is right by a carrier bearing, Could this be an issue as well or just sounds like the U-joint is the problem?

Re: Broken down, need diagnosis.

Ahh, Thanks a bunch! When I was messing with it last night, the only part that was knocking around was the U-joint. Good to know, I'll just have to tow her after the 4th and replace them all, what brand/type U-joint should I get?
