Try some goo gone. That stuff removes most anything. You can also try some heavy cleaners like super clean

Re: how do you get the sticky goo off the steering wheel

Go easy on that engine degreaser - could do some damage to the plastic on the wheel. Just us hand cleaner, like the gritty orange stuff or goo-gone as was already mentioned. Just rub it in straight with your hands and then wipe it off with a dry cloth. It will take a few applications, then wash the grit off with warm soapy water, then clear water. I do this like once a year. I have the leather-like perforated wrap on my steering wheel and I clean that just as described above. In fact, I have two of those covers on the steering wheel because I have become accustomed to the thicker steering wheels on the modern vehicles.

I had one like that and I removed it and put it in a basin with hot water and soap and let it soak for a couple of hours and scrubed it off. Had to do it twice but it did come clean.

Re: how do you get the sticky goo off the steering wheel

I work in the plastic manufacturing field and know a lot about plastics. From my experience in plastic, steering wheels are a covered in a form of rubber type resin. Once rubber is exposed to excessive UV rays and heat it breaks down the chemical make-up. This is the black sticky stuff, the plastic on the steering wheel has broken down and you will have to, more than likely, seal it with some sort of plastic repair coating. Kind of like clear coat for paint or simply replace the steering wheel.
I could be totally wrong but that is just my thoughts. Hope it helps.

Try using some incredibly harsh chemicals such as muratic acid and wire brush the hell out of it, if you have a wire wheel for a grinder that could work too just be carefull.

Then the next question would be....
"How do I repair my steering wheel?"

So, if 86 lovelongbeds is correct, then definitely use the goo gone or equivalent and follow up with soapy/clear water - then cover it up with a wheel wrap. Try it - you'll like it.

Re: how do you get the sticky goo off the steering wheel

I've had this issue w/several of those 4-spoke black GM wheels that were popular in Camaros, Corvettes, Monzas, & Chevettes back in the 70's & early 80's. I used standard hand cleaners to remove as much dirt as possible & then wipe it down w/some PPG paint reducer.

After extended time in direct sunlight, it might take another round of the process. Usually I just have to do it once & use general cleaner (Simple Green) after that for maintenance.

I always use Mr. Clean Majic Erasers for interior cleaning. They work great on vinyl, plastic, and leather. Better on leather than any leather cleaner I have ever tried. If that doesn't work, I like the angle grinder method previously recommended!

Being serious this time... I used lacquer thinner on a rag to clean interior in a car, it was the worse interior grime i have ever witnessed! The thinner stripped it off immediately and did not hurt the plastic.

Talking Re: how do you get the sticky goo off the steering wheel

In the late 70's or early 80's, GM had problems with the compounds they used in steering wheels. Once they get enough U-V rays they deteriorate. Some wheels are worse than others. I had an S-10 whose wheel oozed oil from the holes in the back of the wheel. I had to throw that one out (that makes 3 I have thrown out). I always watch for wheels in the junk yard. If I find a good one, I get it.

I also have used Lacquer thinner for years. I used to be a Detailer.

You detailers know how its done! My little brother detailed at a dealership for a while and taught me everything he learned there. Do you pressure wash interiors off with them still in the car?

Use black vinyl tape and wrap the whole wheel.

Re: how do you get the sticky goo off the steering wheel

I had that same problem with the Chevette wheel in my '37 coupe. I tried simple green, laquer thinner, brake cleaner, and carb cleaner. Everything worked at least to some extent, but some were better than others. It ALWAYS came back, though. I finally fixed it by replacing the column and wheel.

Re: how do you get the sticky goo off the steering wheel

The sticky stuff is elasticizer, and as mentioned , is released by the UV rays. The early/mid '70's 4 spoke Camaro/Chevelle/Chevette wheels are notorious for the problems you mentioned with your wheel.
