Pros & Cons 2004 Silverado 2500HD 4WD

Looking at buying one of these.

2004 Silverado 2500HD 4WD, Short bed, ext cab, 6.0L, Automatic.

Anything to be cautious of? I'm a squarebody guy from the 73-87 side of the world and am looking for advice.

Cons

The insterment cluster will go bad, when and where who knows.
The A/C compressor is notorious for going out.
The steering shaft rattles, Several so called fixes, I havent found one that works long term.
The parking brake is junk.
Thin sheet metal
Internal ABS power relay going bad

Pros

Great engine/transmission combo
Good brakes that last a long time
All around good truck, Better than Ford or Dodge offerings in 04.

I own a 2003 with the same combo. There is one issue that you do need to be aware of concerning the transfer case. Its called "pump rub" it happens when the factory retaining clip for the t-case oil pump breaks or dislodges itself and the pump begins eating holes into your t-case housing. It can be nipped in the bud using a simple fix that replaces that ring with a higher quality aftermarket one. It can be done within an afternoon in a driveway if need be. These are all around great trucks.

You shouldn't have many troubles with your 'new' truck if you make sure there's nothing glaring out at you when you drive it. Most of these trucks run well into the 275k-300k range and with very little trouble. You should know when you drive it if it feels right. It should be tight as a drum and drive flawlessly.

I bought a 2005 half ton and it had 95k on the clock [one year ago this week]. It now has 135k on it and only a water pump has put on it. I can't tell you how many parts my '73, '70 and '67's ate in that many miles!! Mine still feels at tight as a knot and runs perfectly [but I am still getting a tune next week...].
