How much play in a Tcase and Trany?
I bought a parts truck and I was planning on using the Tcase and Tranny. It's a 205 with an SM465. If I rotate the rear ujoint back and forth, I seem to have a fair amount of rotational play. I can hear a bit of a clunk which seems to be comming from the tranny.
How much play is normal? How many degrees should I be able to move the rear ujoint. Is there some part that develops slop in the tranny to tcase coupler? I have a rebuilt 2wd tranny, can I pull the output shaft from this one and put it in the rebuilt without having gears mesh that are from two different sets or should I get a new 4wd output shaft for the rebuilt box? What are my options? Thanks in advance.

I can't give you an exact amount, but really it sounds perfectly normal. The 205 is all gear and the 465 is all gear as well. The more gears you have means more total slack.
For example, I have a 205 and a 465. I also have a detroit in my 14 bolt and all that adds up to a pretty signifacant amount of play or slack before it starts moving. -- Mike

More than likely the coupler between the 2 boxes is sloppy and the shafts should be inspected also. Just had to do the same thing to my tow truck.

I was thinking that might be the trouble. I bought/stole a Dodge 205 case on ebay for 58 bucks that has a a 32 spline rear yoke sporting a 1410 u-joint and a really large flange out the front that will take a 1410 joint. I am going to stick the guts into my chevy 205 case and was wondering about the Chevy 10-spline input shaft and whether it has a gear on it that would be unhappy if it was meshed to the Dodge gears, or if it just meshed with the shift clutch-dogs. I know you shouldn't mix used gears. Anyone know about this? Thanks again.

As far as the gear mesh in a 205, I interchange gears all the time and have not had a problem yet. The gears are so large and they are drenched in 90wt constantly.
