I have before. You have to run tail lights and I believe you have to run mud flaps. Tires are pretty bad about throwing rocks into your rear window.

I did with no mud flaps for awhile with no trouble, but it depends on your local authorities. Truck seems a bit quicker, but will loose traction much easier..

Re: Can you run around with no bed on your truck?

put a piece of something acrossyour frame... angle iron works great..mudflaps have to cover the mid point of the tires then you have a place to bolt up tail/plate lights too...

Re: Can you run around with no bed on your truck?

I did for a couple months after I did my final drop. I bought cheap trailer taillights from a parts store which bolted to the frame. Bolted my license plate on somewhere. Forgot mudflaps & got pulled over one night. I got a citation for "no fenders". I thought it was a pretty cool ticket (cheap too) and kept it. I'll have to dig it out sometime.
It does make the truck considerably lighter. Not a good time in the rain.

What's the easiest/cheapest way to rig up temporary mud flaps?

Quite honestly a 2x4 bolted to the frame then screw some floormats to that.
Very Joe Dirtish but it would get the job done.

Re: Can you run around with no bed on your truck?

I would check your state laws on it. In Texas mudflaps are on required on dual rear wheel vehicles. The stuff that a single wheel setup will toss out are no where near as dangerous as a dual whel setup. (Think pitching machine)

I have no problem being redneck & letting my mullet blow out the rear slider window.

Re: Can you run around with no bed on your truck?

Here in ontario, you require legal lights, mud flaps, and something covering the exposed frame. When i took the box off my s15 to replace it with a sothern one, i drove it with a wooden box me and my dad built with the scrap wood from work. I drove it like this over the winter... didn't want that new box covered in salt. Only cost me 20 for 2x4s and 15 for trailer lights... which i kept, so i don't really consider that part of the cost. Floor of the box was from sweden, sides were from texas, and the 2x4s were from my home town in canada. lol. I work for a solar thermal plant so we get parts from all over.

Re: Can you run around with no bed on your truck?

I drove mine for a while without a bed and I also used the cheap trailer lights and no mud flaps and never had a problem from the law and I had my tag in the window.

Just don't punch it to hard at a red light, the tires will cut loose alot easier.

Re: Can you run around with no bed on your truck?

Here's the setup I used while I was getting my box painted:

It was only off there for about a week (and "yes" it was tricky driving in the rain! - stopping was the problem for me).
