2WD-4WD 400th ?

The 400th in my 82 K2500 went out. I tore it down and the part of the case that holds the snap ring at the second set of clutches is busted off. I bought a used 400th that came out of a 2WD started tearing it down to change the out-put shaft(looks to have been rebuilt with a B&M kit) got it changed. Put it in and no reverse. It wants to go forward in P,D,2,1 but R and N it just revs the engine. I can hear a change in the RPM's when I shift from P-R-N, but thats all.
Anybody have any suggestions?
