hood scoop hole in 67 hood

i just recently bought a 67 stepside with a hood scoop. i really liked the truck but the scoop has to go. unfortunately there is a 12 inch opening cut neatly into the rear portion of the hood. the paint is excellent on the truck and the hood is kind of the leading edge of the paint and bodywork. should i purchase another hood and risk matching the paint or should i just minimize the risk and only weld a suitable piece back into the opening? this would greatly reduce the risk of any major color difference i would think..looking for advice or experience with color matching on these trucks...especially this color.

Maybe try Stylintrucks.com for a suitable hood scoop first. A first gen Camaro true cowl induction scoop looks really good on our trucks and they make a great repro. According to how old the paint is it will be difficult to match but a good painter may get very close. The quad running lights in the grill looks cool! Good luck and very sharp looking truck!

I'm not a painter but either way you go the hood is gonna need to be repainted.It would be faster and I would guess cheaper to get another hood.

Interesting, they also installed double stacked turn signals. They look wider than stock 67/68 signals too.

Nice looking truck. I think your best shot would be to go back to the last owner and track down the paint code. It looks like a recent repaint to me, if it's more recent and you have the paint code and manufacturer, you have a better shot of it matching.

hezie, my thinking is that the repair area can be minimized to the scoop opening and minimal rework paint area. i do not want to repaint the entire hood and not get the colors a dead match as it joins so many other panels. if the rework area is not quite a match it should not be nearly so noticeable. thanks for the comments and i just do not want a scoop on the hood.

A good paint shop can scan your current paint and the computer will come up with the mix numbers for them. My sister's S10 front clip was done this way, matched beautifully.

I'm no painter as well. But, rather he paints a whole hood that probably won't match the adjoining panels or paint the patch panel in the hood where the hole once was, it's still going to be noticeable. IMHO, one will notice non-matching panels just as a spot right in the middle of the hood. One important factor is, if the paint on there now is older, say a couple of years, the new paint with clear coat will be easy to distinguish anyway. After paint sits and settles for a couple of years and is subjected to the weather, road salt and other natural elements it will not be as deep and rich as it was when it was initially painted. It's going to be a challenge either way. But, it can be done!! Just realize a cheaper paint job will be more noticable as opposed to spending a little more money.

weld an L88 style scoop over the hole and paint the middle of the hood flat black

If you really don't like it then you should probably go with a new hood and a good painter. I would think that any pro can blend the fenders into the new hood and you'll hardly notice.

I have been a painter for many years. A good painter will match it where you can't tell that it was done. They may, or may not need to blend the fenders, but either way it won't be cheap. Good work costs good money, and it's worth it.
