Question 3 speed swap

will a 3speed out of a 70 bolt right up to a 71 with a 4 speed? drive shaft?

It will bolt to the bellhousing, but you will need to replace the driveshaft.

Not sure of the answer, but I just posted a 72 for parts that has a three speed, shifter, and the correct driveshaft. I am just a little over an hour east of you, or could get to the Schoolhouse tavern with no problem (my Dad owns it)

i have a 71 1/2 ton with leaf springs and a 2 piece drivve shaft.would i have to replace the front half of the shaft or go to a one piece?

You can go either way. My personal preference is for the one piece shaft because they are usually less trouble than a two piece. That's what I did on my truck when I replaced a 4 speed with a 5 speed.

However, replacing just the front section will be less work and probably less money if you can bolt in a stock shaft.

At my friendly local salvage yard, armed with a tape measure. About 90% of the time I can find one that is close enough, needing no more work than swapping the yoke. For the other 10% I buy one that is too long and have it shortened at a driveshaft shop.
