68 Original Big Block??

I am dealing with this feller who says he has a 68 that was an original big block truck. Right now it has a 305/TH400 (original trans I assume). My question is did they make big block SWB 1/2 trucks in 68? I think I read somewhere that they have a bigger hump or something? Could I get the VIN would that tell me? Thanks!

Yes, '68 trucks were the first year with an avialable 396 big block. Just look on the option sticker in the glovebox door, and it will say something like "396 CID V-8". To the best of my knowledge, you can tell if the truck had a 6 cylinder or V8 by looking at the VIN, but you can't tell what size motor it had. If the vin starts with CS, it is a six cylinder. If it starts with CE, the truck came with an V8.

Something that may signal if it is an original big block, the original power steering pump has a remote resivour mounted on the drivers side by the voltage regulator.
Again...if it is still there that is.

And your right, it should have a high hump if it is an original big block.

The 1968 CST Big Block that Early Classic featured in the Rodstoration series had a couple of pics where they had to cut the small hump out and ad a large hump trans tunnel to accommodate the newer style 700-R4 transmission.
This was an original SWB 68 CST model big block truck that came equipped with a manual trans.

Have fun

I saw that build up also. It was a 3 speed on the column. I think it took a big block AND an automatic to get the large hump. I know of a 72 402 3speed on the column truck that has the low hump also. Just adding to the confusion!!!
