Factory 8-Track player??

Does anyone know if you could get a factory (Delco-type) 8-track player with a 1971 or 1972 Chevrolet/GMC truck?

If so, was it an integrated unit with the radio that fit into the dash ... or was it an add-on 8-track player that bolted to the bottom of the dash?

Re: Factory 8-Track player??

I have yet to see proof that they were factory installed.
I am 99% positive they were only dealer installed.

you need to remember that nonsubscribed members aren't supposed to be requesting items to buy. It's a good way to get suspended and threads closed.

Longhorn Man,

I'm new to the forum and have no idea what a "nonsubscribed member is".

Care to educate?

Re: Factory 8-Track player??

Hey Kiwi, a subscribed member is someone who has paid a yearly subscription to the website, more of a donation to keep the truck site up. It is definitely the best $25 when looking for information and buying some odd and end parts for your truck.
When you become a subscribed member, you are able to post WTB ads and sale parts in the parts section of board. Hope this helps, Trevor

Trevor, how long did it take you to find the 8 track once you actually started looking for one? I'm going to guess maybe a couple years? IDK they seem really rare.

Re: Factory 8-Track player??

Also I forgot to answer a question...
Finding the GM 8 Track is not an easy task. You can find the Bowtie 8 tracks they are much more plentiful. Although the GM 8 is correct...having a Bowtie 8 track could have been installed via the dealership as many times they would install what they had in stock.

Re: Factory 8-Track player??

Ryan, it did actually take a couple of years to locate them. I always had an idea of who owned some from threads over the years. I was finally able to pursue some after getting out of college. It never hurt to ask the members who had them. I ended up with 2 GM 8 track players and already had a nice Bowtie unit. I couldn't have got the GM players had it not been for this site. A lot of options that I have bought for my trucks, I would not have had a clue on what to even look for without this place.
Dewayne, I haven't had the time yet to sit down and make some up. I promise to get to it sometime soon. I am currently working on a few small restoration projects for people, and haven't had much time between it and work. Trevor

Thanks for the update on brackets...
As mentioned I wasn't sure if I was going to install mine but after seeing yours I will install mine.
Agreed with your view of the $25 membership value!!

The only bad thing Dewayne, is having to cut holes in the kick panels for speakers. That's one downfall, but I guess I will have to suck it up for originality. Trevor

What I have done is install a front speaker that is designed with dual speakers. This speaker will give me the ability to run a left and right channel from the eight track.

Re: Factory 8-Track player??

Trevor, that's pretty crazy. Does anyone really have a guess as to how many were actually installed from the dealers? I'm guessing this wasn't ever kept track of? I also agree, if it wasn't for this site, I never would even pursue trying to find rare parts like a Diesel tach and such other items for these trucks. People who think they know a lot about these trucks around here don't know anything compared to most of the long time members of this site.

Re: Factory 8-Track player??

Ryan, I think since I have been around on the site, I have maybe heard or seen of 10-12 eight track players total. Some of those players might have been the same units being past around the site, but I am not sure. I still know who has some around here, and remember a few of the older members who had one or two of them years ago. They are a really rare accessory and some of us are still gathering all the info for them. Trevor

Re: Factory 8-Track player??

It seems that GM really didn't document much of this stuff in any division. My 68 buick was installed, at the dealership, with a Stage 1 package. Do you think I can find the documentation to back it up? No, not so far.
