you have a bad vent system in your gas tank. i bet if you drive around for awhile and when you come to a stop if you take the cap off you'll hear a whooshing sound every time. that means you either need the proper gascap or 71-72 you have a plugged vent hose

I don't think it's a bad vent system. I've never heard the whooshing sound when I removed the cap before filling it.
When I took it off today, the gas tank was literally too full. It looked like the gas came out because the amount of gas in the tank was higher than the bottom of the filler edge.
