Re: Anybody know about this tranny or have it in there truck-Tremec 5-speed

One of the reasons the TKO is an excellent choice for our trucks is that it offers a shifter location which clears the stock bench seat. Some of the other performance transmissions, like Richmond, don't. Quite a few vendors sell the TKO, so it pays to shop around for price before you lay down your money.

Would it fit into the hole in the hump of the sm465? My truck is a high hump.
Thanks Ray

No, it's to the rear of a SM465 or SM420, but it still leaves plenty of clearance for the seat.

Unless you're buying a used Trans, Tremec sets the price on all of their transmissions, for all of their vendors. I talked to a rep at Charlotte, and based on what I've seen on the net, that seems to hold true. Where you can save money is on shipping, or on the install kit.

I'm going to install the TKO600 in my Firebird. The TKO500 has a really low first gear and I've read complaints about the 1-2 shift being really hard for street use.

Re: Anybody know about this tranny or have it in there truck-Tremec 5-speed

I put a TKO600 into my '69 Camaro and LOVED that thing. I didn't get to keep the car long enough (divorce) to put in a different rear end with correct gears but even with the 3.08, it still got out of the hole in a hurry.

I never had any issues but only put about 2000 miles on it before selling the car. I did do some mountain runs and it was a blast to use. Never had missed gears or hard shifting but I also made sure the the trans/bell housing was dialed in correctly. That is major important and many don't take the time to do so and have problems.

Re: Anybody know about this tranny or have it in there truck-Tremec 5-speed

Yes, the TKO500 and 600 are both 5 speeds. The 600 is the more "street friendly" version.

Here's the gear ratios:

http://www.ttcautomotive.com/english/products/TKO.asp

Make sure you get a TKO with a .64 or .68 OD ratio. The .82 isn't going to do much to help fuel mileage.

I was looking at Keisler and ClassicChevy5speed, but apparently, a lot of people have had issues with Keisler.

I'm a long way off from buying mine, but I absolutely want one for my car. It's a priority. I put an AOD trans in my 67 and I regret pulling the manual and not replacing it with one. I'll really kick myself in the ass if my Bird isn't a manual.

If i got this transmission would i have to get the mid shift location adapter that puts the transmission shifter 12.65'' back from the front of the transmssion. Does anybody have pictures of what both look like.
Thanks

Re: Anybody know about this tranny or have it in there truck-Tremec 5-speed

I had a TKO 600 in my Chevelle and loved it. The only reason I sold it was to get a T56 Magnum in my Chevelle, which is the new 6 speed. I sold it on here to fellow board member named Breeh in Washington. I would highly recommend the tranny. But, if you want my opinion, I would put together my own kit. Meaning, buy your own tranny and other related parts, such as clutch, bellhousing, etc. from Jegs or some other place. It will save you a little bit of money. That's what I did. Here's a pic of my new T56 Magnum and bellhousing going in my Chevelle. It's still in the box awaiting it's new home. I'm strongly contemplating putting a T56 Magnum in the the C10 too.

You'll definately need a bellhousing, flywheel and clutch. It depends on you on what type of setup you want to run that determines if you will need a hydraulic or z-bar type setup. You'll also need a clutch-pedal kit too. And Jegs is like a megaparts store for grown men with little boy habits. I get 95% of my stuff from there. They are cheaper and if not, they will price match from a major seller.

Re: Anybody know about this tranny or have it in there truck-Tremec 5-speed

Do you have a manual transmission in the truck now? If so, you don't need a new bellhousing. Quoting a post of mine form awhile back...

"I have the older TKO in my 71 with an 250-6. It is dimentially the same as the TKO 600.

You can use your 71 bellhousing and flywheel, clutch linkage, and speedometer cable.

You need a 26 spline clutch disc instead of the 10 spline from the 3-speed.

I used a Centerforce I pressure plate for a 10.4 in.clutch disc for 71 small block V8. The Clutch disc application (10.4in.) for a mid 80's Camaro for T-5 (This has a 26 spline clutch disc). Throwout bearing for the 71 truck V8...

The other issue is that the throwout bearing retainer on the TKO is 4.683 in. daimeter and the 71 truck bellhousing has a 5.125in.diameter hole for the throwout bearing retainer. It is really a good idea for long transmission and clutch life to have a spacer ring pressed on to the TKO bearing retainer to make up the difference from 4.683in. to 5.124in. This allows the transmission to accurately line up with the flywheel. I had mine made at a local machine shop."

If you have a 67 truck bellhousing, you don't need the spacer for the bearing retainer. 67 and earlier truck bellhousings had the 4.683in. throwout bearing retainer hole in the bellhousing.

Attached is a picture of the Tremec throwout bering retainer with the spacer ring installed.

I have a fourspeed on the floor, the trans is a SM465. All in all how hard was it to switch out?

Re: Anybody know about this tranny or have it in there truck-Tremec 5-speed

if the truck has a high hump transmission cover, then it the same amount of work to get the new transmission in as replacing the clutch.

The fab work is in cuting a hole for the shifter to go through the floor.
Get the driveshaft the right size for the new transmission.
I don't remember, but I think I had to drill new holes for the transmission crosmember on the frame.
I had to trim off some of the mount for mounting the torque shaft mount if the TKO was going into a 3rd generation Camaro to fit the ECE transmission crossmember. Might not have to do that if you have a factory transmission crossmember.

Re: Anybody know about this tranny or have it in there truck-Tremec 5-speed

treveiger,
Greetings. We have a TKO-600 in our 72'. We installed it at the beginning of the summer. One word, AWESOME! Easy to install, a blast to drive!
We bought ours from AMP Performance. They are great to deal with and free shipping at the time of purchase. There were only a couple of things that did not come with the trans. We had a spacer ring made to take up the clearance between the stock bellhousing and the new front bearing retainer on the transmission. I think we also added a spacer between the crossmember and the trans mount.
I have started to write up the install and not posted it yet. Maybe soon.
Good Luck

Awesome!!! When you get the post let me know id love to have a guide on how to do it. Did you have a manual at first or did you convert it from a automatic? Did you buy a kit or get the parts from other cars? What kit or parts did you all need? How the OD work? I hope it works great for you ill keep in touch to see if theres anything you recomend later on.
Thanks
