Wish we could save them all!

I drive by an old truck (prob an 69-72 Chevy not sure haven't been close enough to it) everyday that's sitting in a field and I tell myself every day " I need to go talk to that guy about getting that truck" but then remember I have one already that's more then enough project for me.

Just makes me wonder how many of these have been left out there to die. hidden treasures so to speak guess its in the eye of the beholder to where one guy looks at this thing lost in the bushes and can see a hot ratted out shop truck, and another just see's it as a pile of junk in his way. maybe I'll stop one day and talk to the guy who knows.

Here's a pic I took yesterday, pretty overgrown but it looked decent from a distance in the winter. poor thing!!

Re: Wish we could save them all!

The fate of many old vehicles. Though a much better fate than meeting the crusher, since there is still some chance that someone like us will come along, drag it out of that purgatory, and restore it!

Re: Wish we could save them all!

I hear you. And once you become keen on this style, you start to pick them out of places you never would have seen them before. I drive by a 67 short stepper every day. It appears to be an old restore or nice original that has been parked outside for 5 years now. Just getting a nice patina but other than that looks to be in great shape. Not sure the story on the house and property...never looks like anyone is around. I have been half tempted to go leave a note on the truck, but just haven't due to other projects. Hope it doesn't just go down hill.

Re: Wish we could save them all!

Here's one I saw a couple weeks ago at a salvage yard...There were ALOT of 67-72 among just about everything else you could imagine...Mind you, the tree is grown over the crossmember, so it's been there awhile.

Re: Wish we could save them all!

A friend recently rented a farm and a mile down in the timber is a truck. He says no way to get it out, but says he'll bring me the driver;s door for mine.

Re: Wish we could save them all!

I've had my 70 for more than 10 years, but it's hard to justify keeping it. I have a van (my daily driver), my 1-ton work truck, and my wife's car. Sometimes it's hard to justify 4 vehicles for the 2 of us. The other 3, I have to keep. I'm sure I'm not the only one in this shape.

Re: Wish we could save them all!

Frame seemed to be ok..just has a few bullet holes in it. I took the bucket seat brackets out of it and that piece of trim that is behind the seats on the front of the bed.

Re: Wish we could save them all!

I pass several on the way to and from work every day. One 67/72 with a chassis mount camper has sat in the same spot for over 30 years with a 67 Lemans/GTO sitting 75 ft from it for the same period of time.

Re: Wish we could save them all!

Take a drive through eastern Washington sometime. There's thousands (I'm not kidding) of trucks and cars from the 20's to current just sitting in fields baking away in the sun. Our trucks are VERY common and mostly used as daily drivers. I've only seen maybe a couple dozen restored and nice looking ones in an area about 60,000 sq miles out of hundreds of daily users.

There's one guy who buys a new caddy every two years or so. There's lines of them just sitting on his property, all lined up according to year. The oldest one is probably early fifties. He drives it for a couple years, then parks it for good next to the last one he left. Buys another one.

I've come across old, old cars that are just sitting on the ground because almost half of them were wood from the factory... the wood has all rotted away and the springs and suspension bars fall apart with the smallest amount of pressure. Just a rusted flaky mess.

Re: Wish we could save them all!

My glass guy has three 69 ElCaminos sitting in the weeds, they have been there for at least 25 years, rotting into the ground. I have asked to buy one of them almost every year, he always says "I'm gonna fix em up one day", I know he will never do anything with them, I hope he wills them to me when he dies! My wife helps out an old woman with a 70 Blazer that just sits in her shed, it's well protected but just sits there, I beg her all the time to sell it to me but she wont budge. It is in perfect condition inside and out, it even has AC. Her husband died about twenty years ago and it hasnt been drivin since. I think she is afraid to sell it because her husband loved it so much. At least it's safe.

Re: Wish we could save them all!

hmm not to deviate from the original thread but has anyone ever installed a hood tach on a 67-72 truck like on the judge and buick gsx? i think it might be cool, but sometimes my minds picture is better then reality, as im reminded when i look in the mirror thought i was so better looking
