If you're thinking of a Cummins re-power and you're just wanting to drive it around more than actually haul anything I would suggest the 4 cyl motor. I know a guy that dropped one into an 86 C10 with a Getrag 5 speed and 3.08 rears. His best mpg is 27. Also, a 6 cyl Cummins will weigh more and will be harder on your front end if you aren't planning on putting it into a 1-ton.
