Need 700r4 ID please!!!
I found a local guy that has a 700r4 for sale but he can't find the numbers on the tranny by the pan. I'm hoping for a 88+ but I know it's at least a 89 or older due to the case design. The only numbers I have from the case is "13" on either side of the case and on the tail shaft looks to be "5642717(?)-2" I'm not sure on the last 7 but other numbers are correct. Also I think it's a from a F body style tranny. If anyone can help please let me know what this model is. I don't want to spend money on a 87 or older tranny core.

OK, I don't know if this helps....If it wasn't dark outside I would take pictures of the one I just bought today.... I found the numbers (0CJM250B, 1ST 0=1990) on the passenger side, towards the rear just above the pan, they are small, you will have to look hard.... Also, I found "MD8" on the passenger side of the bell housing, in largers numbers....and I found "8663549" on the drivers side of the case....Also look for a casting seem on the passenger side in the shape of an arch that peeks at the top cooler line fitting.....
2nd thought, Here's a good site...

Thanks for the link but that's where I've been looking and comparing the pics that he sent me. I'm hoping that he can send me the pic of the number ablve the pan but I think it may be ground off.

Everyone is saying that the older 700R4s are junk. Why is that? and what if its been rebuilt? I don't want to swap out my TH350 for some junk 700R4.

From what I've read the ealry models had bad planetary gears, 7 vein pumps, and other mods that killed them fast. In 88 they changed to a 10 vein pump and redesigned the inner workings. You can get them rebuilt to better guts but easier to find newer model.
