84 k10 long tube headers

im deployed and have been buying goodies for my truck, i bought some long tube header for it and am looking at getting some mufflers, but i dont know if i need to get center inlet/center outlet or side inlet/center outlet ect....i cant get my ol lady to jump under my truck and take a picture for me so i have some idea of what to order. ive got a 350 and im going to be running three inch all the way back, just want to make sure i get the right mufflers before i get home. any idea?

also im going to be replacing the 350 thats in it now for a crate or rebuilt 350, does anyone know about the 290 horse gm crate engines on summit/jegs? they only run about 2100....ive seen engines on ebay before i left for deployment for about 2500 or so give or take a couple hundred that claim to get alot more hp and torque. just lookin for opionion...it is my daily drive so want it to be somewhat decent on power and effectiant, some people say to go with a 5.3 or 6.0 but im in the militarty and dont have alot of money to play with and dont feel like dealing with computers.

Re: 84 k10 long tube headers

First off, allow me to thank you for your service. Where are you stationed? Now for the truck...I assume you are not using an existing exhaust? If not, DO NOT run 3". Unless you plan on running a high RPM big block, you will kill alot of low RPM torque. I would run 2.25" true duals. An X, or H, pipe will help a little, but will affect sound. The mufflers really don't matter, unless you buy a kit exhaust (Dynomax, etc.). Offset inlets will move them away from the side saddle tanks, but center inlets will work, too. Most "turbo" style mufflers are reverse flow, so I would get offset/center and install whichever way works best. As for the engine, it will be cheaper to rebuild than to go crate, especially if you plan on modifying. The 290 horse is a good one, but a cam swap will really help it out. So will heads, but now you are negating the point of buying a crate, since you are paying for a bunch of stuff that won't be used. There are some good build sheets out there on the web, with dyno numbers. Here is a good one: http://www.corvettefaq.com/c3/goodwr...20part%201.htm
Good luck!

Re: 84 k10 long tube headers

hey thanks man, im currently stationed on New River Air Station in NC, im was wanting my truck to be somewhat loud and crisp sounding, but i dont want it to sound like i got glass packs if that makes sense...i already bought the headers, i know i can go down from there, but if i go with a 2.5 inch i planned on just having duals all the way back...does it help with power to have a h pipe or x pipe in there? my buddy had 3 inch on one of his trucks and it sounded good...and ran good...i couldnt tell you if it would have ran better with 2.5 inch or not cause he replaced the stock exaust...which with the 3 inch i did help with power as to the stock exaust. im also trying to keep myself on a budget...plus i plan on putting a bit more power in it as to what is has right now...here in a few months after i get back. thanks man..i take all advice into consideration and im not questioning you lol just trying to get the most for as little as i can

Re: 84 k10 long tube headers

2.50 inch will be fine.. it will give you headroom as you do mods, which I am assuming a good hot rodder will do... An H pipe or X pipe balances out the pulses from each bank of the engine... an x pipe will give it a more higher pitched F1 sound... the H pipe will sound mellower but still IMO sounds better than duals...

Again Thank you so much for your Service!!!!

With a mild mannered street truck you will. To support dual 3" exhaust you really need a bigger engine than the 350 you are running and a whole lot of cam & compression with great flowing heads. Much more than a typical hopped up street driven truck has.

2-1/2" will flow well enough for quite a bit of power production but not lose too much on a mild mannered truck. It will make it quite a bit louder than it is now too.

I ran 11.20's with full 2-1/2" exhaust on my 70 Chevelle that weighed 3900 pounds. That takes quite a bit of HP to do.

Re: 84 k10 long tube headers

Sweet ya I was going to say my vote would be for 2.5" all the way back, so you can add some more mods in the future since your planning on it and not need to go bigger later! Flowtechs aren't to bad I have never actually ran them on anything though. Did you look into flowmasters at all or too much money for budget? Oh and thank you sir for your dedicated service to our country as well

Re: 84 k10 long tube headers

The best flowing muffs are the Magnaflows or the Borla Ultraflo...
I have Flowmasters, but they do rob some power... but do sound great

Re: 84 k10 long tube headers

thanks for the replys gents, its not that flowmasters are outta my budget, i think flowmasters are a bit overrated...their not that bad i think your paying more for a name than anything...i really think im gonna go with the flowtechs, they got a good price and some good reviews, i havent read anything bad on them yet...and they seem really good for the money.
