carrier berings

need help removing what I think are called carrier berings,in a 75-80 model chevy rear end.I have the axle out,but uncertain how to remove the ring gear,to remove the berings. Bought a book shows evrything but,thanks for any help

Once you remove the bearing caps (mark them so you get them back on the exact same) you might need to use a pry bar to persuade the carrier out of the housing. To remove the bearings from the carrier you will need to use a press, if you want to save them. If you don't want to save them, then you can carefully cut them off with either a cutting torch, plasma, or a grinder with a cutoff wheel and a hard wheel.

the carrier assembly came out easier than I thought,now that everything is out but the pinion gear the bering is making a grinding noise.I think that i am over my head in this rear end, wondering if this is more trouble than its worth.Wonder if i would come out cheaper to buy another rear end.if so what is the latest year that would fit with the least amount of problems?

What year of truck do you have, and what differential is in it now? Is this a 2wd or a 4wd?
