Best way to do tailgate letters

In the past I've used stick-on letters on my 69 Chevy Fleetside tailgate. However, they start cracking on the edges after just a few years. I'm in the process of totally refinishing the tailgate, so am looking for recommendations on the best way to do the letters.

Thanks.

Re: Best way to do tailgate letters

I'd like to know myself.

My original lettering looked like they used a stencil before I painted over them. They were sorta fuzzy along the edges. It may be possible to use the style airbrush spray painting if you know someone in your area that will do it.

Re: Best way to do tailgate letters

paint the whole area white, or whatever color you want the letters... then stick on the stick on letters over what you painted... paint the rest of the gate, peel off the letters

Re: Best way to do tailgate letters

Get a sign painter to letter them. I painted signs for a living back in the 60's and hand lettered mine.

Re: Best way to do tailgate letters

I am curious also since I have an after market tailgate with no letters. Anyone have pictures of what they did with these?
