Bell housing Help
I have a 67 c-20 that had a blown up 327 motor with a 4 speed granny transmission. I have pulled the 327 motor out of the truck and left the bell housing attached. The 327 motor had the starter mounted to the bell housing and on the back of the bell housing it had ears on the bottom to mount to cross-member.
The 350 I purchased to put in the truck has a different bell housing for a manual transmission and the starter bolts into the motor case, no ears on back of the bell housing for cross-member. Can the 327 bell housing work for this 350 by removing the starter from the motor and re-installing the 327 starter? Or do I need to get some other type of transmission support for the 350 bell housing. |

I know you have to use the bell housing you have on the 327 if you keep the 67 granny 4 speed.
The 350 I had in my '71 had the starter bolted to the bell housing. When we put the 454in it we used the bell housing from the 350 and used a starter that bolts to the bell housing and it works great. So I figure the bell house from the 327 should work on the 350. I am sure others will chime in with more info.

Thats what I was hoping for.....I ve been try to find information on on this subject and having a H&^L of a time. If I could use the 327 bell housing and starter and remove the starter from the 350 ...that would make my day!

The Shyguy is right. The interchangeability on chevy motors is amazing. You can use the flywheel, clutch & bell houseing from the old engine.

So I can leave the starter and 327 bellhousing in the truck, and remove the 350 bellhousing and starter mounted to the motor. Has anyone here done this, can they confirm !

I do it all the time. I have a 71 bell housing set up on a chassis to test run engines. I use the same starter with the same bell housing on 40 different engines.

The 327 bellhousing and starter are a sure thing. Did the 350 come with a flywheel? If yes, measure the outside diameter. If it is about 14" (168 teeth), leave it on. You can use the 327 flywheel if your 350 is 85 or older. If the 350 is 86 or newer you will need to get a 168 tooth flywheel for a "one piece seal" crank. You can see the difference (if there is a difference) just by looking at the crank bolt circle.

One more thought. Is there a pilot bushing in the back of the crank on the 350. You'll need one if you're keeping the manual tranny.
