Re: Need Opinions, Should I maybe purchase this motor?

the only thing that seems questionable to me about the 1st motor is that he disassembled it for "inspection" after only 5,000 miles...meaning that maybe something wasn't done right with the motor.

Looks like they're both flat top piston with open chamber heads, compression will be anemic at about 8:1. It would really respond to some good heads, closed chamber with big valves would bump compression to around 9:1. Too bad shipping is so high, I have a nice Gen 6 block at the machine shop along with a new GM steel crank and new forged Wiseco slugs.

Re: Need Opinions, Should I maybe purchase this motor?

Think im going to hold off on these motors all together I cant make up my mind. I really dont want to buy something and have something go wrong would rather have a motor that has a warranty..

thanks everyone for the input.

really? You're spending $1000 dollars on a big block you want to throw you into the seat and now you're doing nothing because of a warranty? Buy the one that runs. It's a steal. Seriously.

Re: Need Opinions, Should I maybe purchase this motor?

Actually, Its a good thing I passed on them. I decided to give my mothers coworker a call. He builds drag race motors on the side called him to see what he had, told him im looking to spend around 3k. He told me I could buy the motor out of his 84 c10 for 3k.

Its a 454 with literally 10k in just parts. He said its basically bullet proof. He said he will take 3k from me because he wants it to go to a good home. He said with a good set of heads it will push about 550 no problem. Right now its about 475, plus he has all the other stuff I will need for it. He might even swap it in for me..

Still not a bad price. I just paid $800 for what turned out to be a 4 bolt main block Friday night. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places, but around here, the people that have big blocks are keeping them.

Re: Need Opinions, Should I maybe purchase this motor?

I would go with the second, It's running/you can hear it and give it a good going over (bring someone with you who knows motors if possible...). It's ready to install if that's a factor. That is a very good price! He'd load it... Roger

Find out exactly what parts and heads he has in this... I can't see 10k in parts when he has stock heads... imho..

^ No doubt, $10K in parts will build a strong 540 or bigger!

Re: Need Opinions, Should I maybe purchase this motor?

Going to go to his house and check it out tomorrow. He said he can swap it all in for me and get everything ready to go if I want, also said when he was building the motor at the time he ran out of money so thats why its stock heads.

I agree too. We just built a 4-bolt 4340 crank 496 with I-beam rods, solid roller cam, Dart CNC 357cc heads and Dart intake for less than $10k.

It sounds fishy to me like he has an intake & cam on a stock long block and is trying to pass it off for way more than it is worth.

It sounds like the second motor is about the same thing you would be getting with buying the third one.

I would go for the first one just because I know how bad things can be in a motor when it can still run & sound OK.

Re: Need Opinions, Should I maybe purchase this motor?

I know the guy with the 3k motor, my mother has worked with him for 5 years. Ive seen the truck that it was in, ive seen it run and drive. Its not like some guy off craigslist, I feel more comfortable buying from him then some random guy off craigslist. He sold the truck minus the motor a month ago, was going to put the motor with better heads in his prostreet chevelle.
