Absolute pain in the butt to remove the housing but it could give you the clearance you need to keep it all below your relocated bed floor. You have to have room to pull the wheels off at full lift before the axle tube hits the frame rail too so it might take a bit or a reverse arch to do this in a 67-72 with round wheel wells.

You can see where it sits relative to the frame notch arch and take some measurements to see how high up the center section gets.
