Ignition cylinder lock

Does anyone know how to get the lock cylinder out of the ignition switch in a '70 GMC? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Ignition cylinder lock

I hope you have the key. There is a small hole that will fit a paper clip. Push the paper clip in and turn the key backwards, then the paper clip should go in a little further. Then the barrel should come right out. That is how it worked on mine.

Success! Now the key goes in the dash where it's supposed to. Thanks again.

Re: Ignition cylinder lock

This is the verbage from when i read online how to remove, just incase it is different "remove the key cylinder by inserting a wire, or paper clip into the small hole located about the 2 o'clock position of the key. There is a special tool made for this , but i have used a small hard wire (paper clip) with no problems. Try putting the key in, look at the shiny key cover, and insert the wire into it, pushing in, and then turn the key counter-clockwise, just a bit, and remove the wire, the ignition cylinder should pop out. You can now remove the bezel, and the ignition switch can be removed from the back side of the dash panel.

The bezel on the back side has one flat side on it. This piece simply pulls off of the ignition switch. Next, you can remove the wire plug from the switch, by pushing in on the two tabs with a flat tip screwdriver, or a like tool. It will expose the 7 prongs on the ignition switch. I hope this helps. I am not a mechanic, but i am very mechanically inclined, and learn alot from trial and error, so far my lessons have been successful."
