Weird thing on fuel line

Any idea what this part is for? It was on the fuel line between the fuel pump and carb. My fuel line had a lot of hose connections and this was inside of something that looked like a garden hose!

It's off now and it rattles when you shake it. Is it a back-flow/check valve thing?

Thanks

I've never seen anything like that. It's possible it's some sort of check valve. Maybe they thought the fuel would drain out of the carb bowl area???

If you blow through it and you don't hear a sound... it's a dog whistle.

I like that-I did put my lips on it too (against my better judgement and years of being told "Don't put your lips on it"). I can blow through it both ends.

A buddy of mine thought it might be one of those magnetic fuel savers that they used to say increased your gas mileage. There's no markings on it at all.

Weird!
