engien question

dad an i got given a 60's model c20 chevy pick up. to use for parts the cab is good on it one of the fenders an hood. its a long bed i want to say maybe a 63 but im not sure. its got a v8 in it we have not pulled it yet but dad thinks its a 283. its got a 2 barrel on it could it possibly be a 327?

on the manifold its got the firing order of course and the vavle covers say chevrolet on them in the old school writing. the altnator is on the drivers side could this be a 283 or 327?

he wants a 283 to build a hotrod why i dont know not enough engine for me. i dont think it whould have a chance up agenst some of the newer stuff

but could this possibly be a 327

Your best bet for identifying the engine is to get the block casting numbers which are right next to the distributor hole at the rear of the motor. Once you've got those numbers here is a really good link for identifying the block:

Has helped me figure out a lot of engines. The one in your truck could be either a 283 or 327 by the description. The casting numbers are the most reliable way to know for sure.

I guess really it could be just about any small block swapped in there too. The numbers won't lie...
