Re: 1996 z71

Sounds like a similar problem I had with my 03 Sierra. It is a common problem with the gauge clusters, but I haven't heard of it in the GMT400 trucks. Hopefully someone will chime in with some input. Only think I can suggest is to check wiring and make sure you don't have a short somewhere possibly in the gauge cluster area.

Re: 1996 z71

The tachometer dying throws me. If the speedo and the trans issues were the only problems, I'd start checking the VSS (vehicle speed sensor). I haven't heard of any cluster failures in these trucks like the 03-06 trucks. When this happens, do they both do it at once, or do they do it seperately at random? May be two different issues.

Re: 1996 z71

they both do it at once the tach goes to zero the speedo goes to 0 or 100 and the trans starts like slipping

Re: 1996 z71

The mention of the speed sensor is what I was talking about, but I do not beilve it would affect the tach. The last response about a faulty ignition switch could be on target? Does the PRND321 shift indicator go out when this happens? Is the check engine light on? If not take to AutoZone and have them put a code reader on it and see if it has some stored codes, make sure to write them down.

Re: 1996 z71

It is not uncommon to see ignition cylinder issues as the truck gets older. Is the key worn down pretty bad? Try to get a new one cut at the dealer or a locksmith and see if the issue gets better. Be ready, they charge around $20 for the first cut and you will need to show proof of ID and ownership of the truck (a registration receipt will usually works). Does she have a bunch of keys hanging on the same ring as the truck key? The swinging and weight can put some strain on the cylinder. My Mom used to do this, I replace the ign cylinder on here 88 GMC Safari 3 times in 10 years.
