I would like your opinion of a gas tank I had made!

I had a gas tank made for my LS swap in my Jimmy. The builder says that the filler neck is welded from below.

I agree it is or would fall out. It sure looks like it was prepped for welding and think it would look better finished/welded on top.

So whats your opinion?

It probably won't matter, but it would look better welded up..

Re: I would like your opinion of a gas tank I had made!

I would either weld it or put some kind of sealer to keep debris out of the seam

If you have a good TIG guy near you, I bet they would weld that up cheap. I personally would want it welded up on the top to match the look. It looks kinda unfinished.

If I am a betting man you could not weld 360 degrees around the neck due to the centerline of the neck to the top of the tank

Re: I would like your opinion of a gas tank I had made!

I would imagine it would be welded, or it would fall off as already mentioned, but it don't appear to show any heat signs in that area, mig welded?? judging by the surrounding welds, I would leak test the tank before doing any thing (no more than 4 PSI for a rectangle vessel). Look real close for leaks, gas will find ways out when water or air wont. Nothing will piss ya off more than completing the instl, filling it up & seeing & smelling gas.. If no leaks then seal the joint around the filler tube with clear silacone, just to keep water / corrosion out. Once installed, you wont see it anyway

Re: I would like your opinion of a gas tank I had made!

I didn't vote on your two choices.

I'm fine with it the way it is, but the nit picker in me would put some sort of bead of sealant around the top to prevent rust.

Re: I would like your opinion of a gas tank I had made!

If it is solid I would get some plumbers solder and fill the gap. This way it would prevent rust and fill any pin holes that might be in the weld. Also would still be somewhat flexable and won't chip out like JB weld.

What's the tank made from? I would also like to see pics of the whole tank.

Thanks

Re: I would like your opinion of a gas tank I had made!

Here is the top of the tank. I will take pics of the sides, front, and back when I am near the tank. It is at a fabrication/welding shop where I am having my transmission pan notched for driveshaft clearance and he is going to tig weld the fuel filler. Even though it will not be seen and is probably 100% functional I just feel it would be "right" to be welded. It is aluminum and made to my dimensions.

Re: I would like your opinion of a gas tank I had made!

Well the tank leaked at the very bottom seam

I used JB weld on the seams and it seems to be holding, time will tell. It is a fuel cell guy tank. If I sent the tank to him I am sure he would have fixed it but I didn't want to wait or argue about shipping costs. Right now the tank is holding about 5 gallons and the engine runs!

Re: I would like your opinion of a gas tank I had made!

Would sure like to hear fuel Cell guys response on this. I am thinking of buying a tank soon. A leak on the seam? Seriously? Was it not checked for leaks before it was shipped.

Re: I would like your opinion of a gas tank I had made!

In his defense he emailed a response back almost immediately. He says he has never had a leak in ten years and that he pressure tested my tank? He asked if I tweaked the tank or anything. I offered to send him a video showing the tank leaking and that the seam looked welded with no dents, scratches or anything. He replied a video would not be necessary.

He asked what he could do to make it right. I am not sure if he would have paid shipping both ways to fix the tank or not and I did not ask. I really did not want to be without the tank for 2-4 weeks with shipping and everything.

I asked him if he thought JB weld would work and he replied yes. It seems to have worked but I only have 4-5 gallons in the tank right now. I have read many, many satisfied customers so I have to assume mine was a fluke?

I didn't post about the leak to bash anyone and that is why I have not posted in the review area. I am about as anal an electrician as there is and I occaisionally make a mistake. I guess its possible I am the only leak in ten years. Am I thrilled my new $700+ tank leaks and now has JB weld on one corner, NO But It is what it is.

If you wanted to ask him anything I would ask if your tank leaks would you have to ship it back on your dime?

Re: I would like your opinion of a gas tank I had made!

Do those tanks have the square baffling in the bottom that keeps the gas centered while turning?

On the FI tanks he has two baffles that run from the front to the rear of the tank.

Smile Re: I would like your opinion of a gas tank I had made!

I just saw this. I would absolutely have paid the shipping back to me and back to him. I have been doing this for a long time and have never been one to be happy with an unsatisfied customer. I want the tank the fit right the FIRST time with no problems. I will go as far as building a completely new tank if the need ever arises. My main concern is customer satisfaction and ease of installation. I have always stood behind my products. I did a lot of R&D on these tanks to make them affordable and easy to install. When you buy a tank from me, you have nothing to worry about. As far as the filler neck, they are welded from the bottom before the "lid" is welded on. This is a far better method in my opinion for attaching the fill tube. Does it look unfinished? Yes, but I never knew of it to be an issue. I will always welcome any constructive critism. That is what makes things better. Please, if anyone has any questions or concerns about my products, contact me and I will do everything in my power to make I right. Thanks to all my loyal customers. Mark

A silly question. I use to weld torque converters together in a remanufaturing process. After wards we pressure tested them in a water tank. When we saw bubbles we just used a punch and a ball peen and tapped on the leak. Can he do this with aluminum?
