Outter door handles - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I removed the door handles and put the buttons back in their proper place. Is there some kind of retaining plate I'm missing 'cuz when I re-installed them they both just pushed right back into the handles and turned on their sides again. I can't find a cheap set of handles either

Check the inside of the door on the bottom to see if your retaining plate are there. The plates are held in place by ears on the door handle that are peened over. It is common for the ears to brake off and then the retaining plate falls off allowing the buttons to go to far in. It is not a great fix but I have removed handles that had the plates wired on by drilling holes in the handles to run the wire through.

Ok I thought that's what those things were. I actually found both plates and someone zip tied them to some piece of plastic but that obviously didn't work. I'm gonna see what I can do with these things. Thanks

I had the same problem on my 69C10, I used JB weld to hold the plate on, that was 15 years ago and it's still there.

Only have 1 spring still. I have some JB Weld around here too

If your careful and a little creative you can using some small screws and a piece of radio strapping material used to hold radios up in the rear. Those things are so poorly made today, best to stick with a decent vendor when you buy them and pay the premium price.

You can find another spring at most hardware stores, its not a super special spring, just take the one you have with you and find one close to the same size and compression.

Went to Home Depot earlier and got the exact same size spring in a pair. I was all excited and ran home to JB Weld them up and couldn't find it >
