Vent window rubber, any secret to installing?

I can't get the vent window rubber piece in the corner notch to save my life. I've gotten the hole thing dissembled. Still can't get it to pop in the corner, I've heated it in the dryer and it still wasn't maneuverable. Is there some secret to this I don't know lol?

Lube it with soap and water. I used a hammer handle to pull it back toward the corner while a friend squeezed it with a pair of channel locks. I don't know if that's the best trick or not, but it worked. I swear, putting the doors back together has been a pain in the arse!

Now you know why new vent assy are so expensive. I hope after all your work you can open and shut yours as expected.

I had the same issues. take your time . I used wd 40 when I did mine, really not that tough once you get started! stay focused & use the opposite side for a road map. best of luck, Pat p.s., don't drill out the pivot! ask me how I know.

x 2. Don't drill out the pivot rivet. Instead, drill out the two rivets that hold the bracket to the frame that the pivot is mounted on. These two rivets can be replaced with pop rivets, as well as the other rivets that hold the rubber to the channel. WD40 works great, as well as letting them set out in the sun a few hours. Hope this helps.

Re: Vent window rubber, any secret to installing?

I was trying soapy water and WD-40 and still it was a PITA!. The I tried using cable lube. Works great. I actually pushed in most of the channel using just my fingers. I got this at the local electrician supply store. It's made to slide rubber cables inside of metal conduit. Not greasy, cleans up nice.

Re: Vent window rubber, any secret to installing?

Not to be the stick in the mud, but I had no luck getting my new seals to fit right.

Sure I could get it to snug up in the corner, but then it would bacon up on the flat edge along the door. Just sucked, and for the amount of time and effort I spent on those stupid things I should have just sprung for the entire wing vent assembly and be done with it. Which I ended up doing anyways, and am happy with the results of going that route.

Of all the things I did on my burb, this stupid little project is one that I get hot about to this day... If it were me, just buy a whole new assembly and be done with it.

Re: Vent window rubber, any secret to installing?

Board member Seacrow had Ed at Mother Truckers restore his Grandfathers old truck about 5 years ago.
I asked how his truck is holding up since the resto, he pointed out 2 things that are not holding up... the reproduction 69-72 steeringwheel & the repop vent window asm.
Maybe its worth the trouble in the long run, or maybe he got a bad set.
Only time will tell

Aint that the truth? After taking everything apart, getting everything powder coated and dealing with rivets I wonder if I'd been better off.

The repro rubber also craps out really fast - on my '70 I did them about a year ago, and I noticed it was already starting to crack a little on one side.

Re: Vent window rubber, any secret to installing?

I cut a little rubber off in the corners and lubed it up and it went in, it may not be right but it worked and i have no leaks.

NOS is not much better either. I used a set that sat on a shelf for 40 yrs. After one year of being installed, they already are cracking. They were in as perfect shape as you could ever hope to find and fit like a glove, but the rubber still deteriorates even out of the sunlight.

To keep it from cracking, Armor-all it several times a year.
