all,
i am wanting to seperate the springs from my hood hinges & would like to know the best/easiest way to do this?? i would prefer to not poke my an eye out!!

any help would be greatly appreciated!!

ps. if it matters i have a '72 chevy hood

When they are in the open position, there really is not to much spring pressure on them. Just pull and move to the side that they will come off of. they won't ping pong around the garage.

If everything is still on the truck make sure someone holds the hood open for you!

Don't have them powder coated like I did. The heat takes the tension out of the spring and it won't hold the hood open.I ended up sand blasting a pair and painting them.

thanks for the info! would you or anyone know if you can "cad plate" them?? i imagine i will just do like you & paint them.....

I built a fixture that had a hydrolic jack in the middle and a spring on each side.When I jacked it up , the springs " spred " apart.I then blasted,primed and painted them.After they were good and dry I put em' back on the powder coated hinges.That was 10 yrs ago ,they still look great.

I use a brake spring tool. I tried just screwdrivers and it was no-go.

easiest way to get them off is put thick washers between the coils with the hood part way down then when you lift the hood they will come right off. Putting them back on I used a small come-a-long between two fence posts and stretched just far enough so they would go on the hinges, used pieces of wood to protect the paint. Put them on closed the hood the the wood fell out, springs on.

One of the truck rags had an article about removal and they used wrenches, like the suggestion for using washers.

man I was going to do that! glad i read this. can you powder coat the hinges and order new springs????

i use a big a$$ flat head screw driver to get them on and off.

its alittle scary, but as mentioned above, they are not going to take off flying on you.

I used the hook on a tie down strap to hook onto the spring then I wrapped the strap around my hand to get a good grip then I just pulled enough to stretch it then off to the side. To paint it I backed my truck up by a tree then used two ratchet tie downs (one on each side of the spring to the bumper and then to the tree) to pull the spring open enough to paint the whole thing
