I have a 69 long bed, just recently had a new holley carb installed on my truck. It ran fine for about a week or two but one day i was driving on the highway and as soon as i took my foot of the gas it began to sputter. When i came to a stop it would stall if i didnt keep my foot on the gas and then became very hard to start. ANy ideas of what may be going on? Im in the process right now of removing the fuel filter and the lines to put on new ones, and am also taking out the tank to clean it. Does the filler neck seperate from the tank or do I just have to pull it all out? Thanks

sounds like a vaccume leak problem or the diuzzy advance isnt working right

Process of elimination. Check ignition first and make sure all is well. Then move on to carb. Maybe some crap got past the filter and clogged your idle passages. Maybe try some carb cleaner or pull the carb apart and inspect for crap in it and blow out those tiny orifices.

Since you're in the process of doing all of that, is it still running?

If it is, I'd check the above recommendations and one other thing, make absolutely sure that it's not flooding on you. The sputtering and dying and then hard to start could be a flooding condition. When it does that check the carb throat and see if you can detect a strong gasoline smell.

Thanks to all of the replies. I put it all back together new lines and brand new filter, fuel is coming thru clean. I drove it for about 10 min and then it started sputtering again. Apparently the carb IS flooding. Only way to keep it idling is to keep on the gas. 68gmse and gonzo6869 u were right about the flooding, do u know what might be going on or what i need to do? Thanks

Had that problem with an Edelbrock a while ago, I think my problem was due to a couple of things: bad eclectic choke, dirt in the carb and a couple of bad internal gaskets (it was only 4 months old). You might want to take your carb all apart and clean it. Also, check your float level; make sure that is not the source of your flooding. Next, check your fuel pressure; you should not be putting more then 6 or so PSI to the carb.

Same problem with my 69 6cyl. Monojet. I adjusted the air/fuel screw 1/2 turn and it didn't do me any good (read that somewhere else). I live in a HEAVILY congested area and this is my daily driver so I need to get it figured out soon. Is this an easy carb to rebuild? I've never rebuilt one. Are the floats adjustable w/o pulling the carb apart? I initially thought vacuum leak but I can't hear one. P.S. I work best with labeled pictures
