Factory Wheel Compatability

Good morning guys! I'm trying to track down some original style wheels for my 6-lugger. I currently have the 4X4 Rally's and their just not for me. Aside from buying new repro's, does anyone know the year range in which the 6-lug wheels are compatible? Is it only Chevy trucks or will older 40's-50's 6 lug car wheels work? I'm having a hell of a time tracking down a 60-66 truck with the original's still on it. Thanks for the help!

Re: Factory Wheel Compatability

I would almost think that any Chevy or GMC truck from at least 60 - late 80's with the 6 lug pattern would fit our trucks ..

Thanks 62 Longbed. I'm gonna venture out this weekend at some local junkyards and see waht I can find. Just want to go back to that original look and haven't had any luck thus far finding these things. Thought they'd be everywhere. I've only looked at our body style, so I'll keep an eye out for some of the later years as well.

I have a set of wheels off a 77 suburban on my 65, the center holes are a little tight, but they fit. hubcaps fit too.

6 hole wheels will physically swap from sometime back in the 1930s up to 1987 (to 91 for burbs). Later ones still use the same bolt circle but will have center hole and offset problems. Wheels which used humps instead of clips to hold the center caps are usually about 1960 or newer. If you need to clear disc brakes with 15" wheels, they have to be 71 or newer.

The last 6 hole Chevy car wheels were 1948, and most of those will be 16" or larger. The other GM car makes used 5 hole wheels.

Ray. You forgot the 57 Chev Black widow. Had 6 bolt wheels on it. Factory built race car. Used stronger axles and wheels to handle the power of the fuely 283.

Re: Factory Wheel Compatability

You are absolutely right, geezer. It used a modified 1/2 ton rear axle. I don't expect to see any of those wheels for sale anytime soon though.

Re: Factory Wheel Compatability

the factory 6 lug truck rims are the same from 1961-1970.1960 model trucks used the clip type hubcaps as they were carry overs from the 59 trucks.i would think the steel rims from a 73-87 4 wheel drive are much wider than the originals for the 60-66 trucks as they were only 5 and a half inches wide.very narrow.
