Camper size?

I am considering getting a camper to occasionally use with my 1971 C10 (V-8, 2WD, long bed). Any suggestions regarding:

1. The proper length, width, height that will drop right into an 8-ft longbed?

2. Any camper brand/model suggestions (with model/part number)?

3. Any company out there selling a somewhat vintage looking camper?

4. Any suggestions on how to secure the camper without altering the C10's original sheetmetal?

5. Anyone have photos of their truck with a nice fitting camper?

This is a Huntsman Camper that has been on the '70 since 1972. The takeoff tailgate is leaning against the shed next to it. This truck was stored inside most of it's life...

Re: Camper size?

LockDoc,

That camper is a beauty. My dad had a similar looking camper back in the day for his 1971 Cheyenne.

Any info on your camper's size, bed measurements or such? While that version of camper obviously works, I wouldn't mind a camper that was a smidge smaller. Any suggestions?

Anyone know of a perfectly sized (for our trucks) new style camper ... such as from Lance or such?

Re: Camper size?

New truck campers are substantially lighter than the vintage campers but they are very expensive - $12,000 - $17,000 is not out of the ordinary for new. A vintage camper, like the beauty LockDoc has, really goes with the truck, but one that size will exceed 2000 lbs. You will need to beef up rear springs or get some air ride bags and have tires that will have the appropriate weight carrying capacity. I just sold a year 2000 Coachmen that fit my Dodge Ram and weighed 1860 lbs. without our gear. There are several different tie down systems available. The systems that fasten to the frame are the most substantial RV sites will have lots of info.

Don't know off the top of my head but I will measure it tomorrow afternoon.

Re: Camper size?

LockDoc,

What brand/model of camper do you have?

With this info I can start combing Craigslist for a vintage camper. Combined with the new-in-the-box 1972 8-track player that I just bought ... my vehicle for the perfect family road trip will nearly be completed. Clarke Griswold will have nothing on me!

++++++++++++

Clark Griswald: Roy; can I call you Roy? Have you even driven cross-country?
Roy Walley: Oh, hell yes. Drove the whole family to Florida. Worst 2 weeks I ever spent in my life. The smell from the back seat was terrible.
Clark Griswald: Ooooh. Ooooh, I know that smell. Roy, could you imagine if you had driven all the way to Florida and it was closed?
Roy Walley: Closed? Uh, they don't close Florida.

OK, the camper on my '70 is called "The Huntsman", made in Chetopa, KS. The part that sets in the bed is 126" long, the part over the cab is 57 1/2" long. It is 78" tall in the back and 91" wide.
