74 GMC 4WD diagram question/concern...

I dont know the gear diagram for 4WD. My wife dropped a toolbox on the floorshift today and I was wondering if yall could teach me the gear position locations. I havent had it very long, so my knowledge is limited. I believe its factory 4WD with a 205 transfer case, but I could be wrong.
My terminology sucks too, this is my first vehicle that didnt have push button 4WD. And it has a full boot too so I cant just see the slots. Unless...they are underneith? ANY info is greatly appreciated.

Re: 74 GMC 4WD diagram question/concern...

I assume you've got the factory 4 speed tranny to have the 205 T/C. If so, it's like this:

----Dashboard----
4 Low
Neutral
2 High
4 High
---Seat---

If you've got an auto tranny, then you have a 203 TC. They're like this:

---Dashboard--
4 Low Lock (true 4wd)
4 Low
Neutral
4 High (here's where you want it for normal driving)
4 High Lock (true 4wd)
--Seat--

If you're still unsure of what you have, post a pic so it can be positively identified.

T-case has no drain plug, that looks like 203 to me

Re: 74 GMC 4WD diagram question/concern...

don't the 205's have a center gear? If I am not mistaken, that should be a chain driven case. likely the 203. But it's been awhile since I messed with my 205.

Re: 74 GMC 4WD diagram question/concern...

I believe that is a NP203. It should be as prong said with the LOCK positions. So:

---Dashboard--
4 Low Lock (true 4wd)
4 Low
Neutral
4 High (here's where you want it for normal driving)
4 High Lock (true 4wd)
--Seat--

Yep, that big monstrosity is a 203. If it has been converted to part-time, "Loc" positions would be 4x4, the others would be 2wd.

No, but there is the possibility that the transfer case was converted to part time. If so, "Loc" will be the only 4x4 positions.

OOk.
What gear does the truck need to be in to shift? Does it matter?

I've almost always had to be stopped and in neutral... but all my 203's have had shifters that don't like to move.
