Underhood painting/electrical advice?
I've got a 72 swb (non A/C). I've blown the motor up in, so while it's getting rebuilt I thought I would spend some time under the hood cleaning things up. The wiring harness had a mile of electrical tape on it, and 4 WIRE NUTS. Also, why the motors out I thought I would also paint the fire wall and inner fenders.
I guess my questions are...... -What have you guys done with the harness where it attaches to the radiator support? I don't like the look of the original plastic wire holder on the support or the one on the top of the firewall. -What do I paint me master cylinder with? I painted the brake booster with gloss black krylon, but if brake fluid gets on the m.s. it will peel right off, right? Someone suggested brake caliper paint, but...? Thanks in advance. |

Re: Underhood painting/electrical advice?
Capt'n you might try using Eastwood M/C paint as they claim the paint will resist brake fluid break down. I used paint from O'Reilly when I painted my new M/C, and just touched up as needed.
As far as running wires, it will be up to you as far as how you want to run the wires. There's wire loom, and other products that can be used to cover the wires depending on the route you will be taking, but regardless of what product you use, make sure to keep them safe as they are the lifeline for your truck. If you're considering using electical tape to wrap the wires, be sure to use some high quality tape. IIRC, the tape that GM used didn't actually adhere to the wire like common electical tape does, resulting in a non-sticky removal.

Re: Underhood painting/electrical advice?

I wish I bought a 'good lookin' truck and did easy things to make it better lookin vs things noone sees and doesnt make it run better, just keeps it runnin'!! Any other pics? I'll be doing this this summer hopefully!

Re: Underhood painting/electrical advice?
Thanks for the advice. I'll probably just try the O'Reilly's caliper paint and see how that goes. If it doesn't work good, I'll buy a new caliper for $17.00. As for the electrical tape.....I pulled all the tape off, and put the entire harness back in black wire loom. Over 30' of wire loom at 3 different sizes. It should look a lot better than it did. After rebuilding the motor, I had to do it on the cheap, but I'll post some pictures of the finished product.

Re: Underhood painting/electrical advice?
Subscribed! ...and nice pics Oldblue!
Here’s some shots of what I’ve done and have yet to do… As you can see, I’m in dire need of durable paint for not only my MC but also the booster bracket and manifolds, inside the fenders, hinges…still a long way to go. On my wiring, I’ve almost finished wrapping and hiding all of the wires going to the upper hood wire shroud. Some wires that are not in use yet, like the kick down switch wire, have been coiled up and hidden behind my carb. Personally, I like the stock wiring looms (excuse the fact that mine are 40 years old) but because they don’t fully contain the wires on each end, most of those sections in front have been carefully wrapped and secured under the fender and core support lips. For the front left wires that actually go to the alt, etc I again wrapped them and placed them as low as I could. On the black background they are nearly invisible. Have fun with your clean up and we would love to see some pics of what you have done so far! |

Re: Underhood painting/electrical advice?
Well I still haven't painted the M/C, but everything else is pretty much done. There is still a little bit of detailing and cleaning up, before I put it up for sale. I found a 72 Blazer I really want, and the family is growing, so its got to go.

Re: Underhood painting/electrical advice?
air cleaner was a freebe got a Edelbrock Carb here thats shot from results of backfiring. gotta get me some wire loom and some wire so I can hide the wires a little better. that's an old picture. i've done a little bit since then, just haven't taken any pictures. some of the hoses aren't even needed. still left over from stock intake.
