squares w/ flatbeds picts and advise please

hey guy im thinking bout changing my 83 1/2 4x4 to a flatbed, it would just be more practical for me but any who would like to see picts of any u have

also been reserching and thinking bout maybe a treated wooden flat, becase im handy and could build it my slef (unsing the simple farm wagon flat) but im wondering about attchment to the rails. we chain wagon flats but id want something more solid. so any adivse would be nice, althought id love a steel flat i just dont see momma letting me drop that kinda money right now.
but picts of steel or wood would be kool.

also would it be too rednek to have stacks on the truck with a flat bed?

I always thought that SRW pickups looked a little odd with flatbeds, but that's just me. What county are you in?

nelson co here almost on the anderson co line, i agree that SRW do look a lil odd with flatbed, but if i use like a 32x11.50 or 33x12.50 it fills it in kinda nice. i had a ford with steel flat with 33x12.50 and it wasnt bad.
everyone around home here is knocking me because i have such a nice bed, but its not gonna be nice the way i abuse work trucks.

In Southern Ky when the sun come up more will take pics of my 86 with a steel diamond plate flatbed on it. Bed came off a 3/4 ton furd we cut 18 inches out of it and put it back together made it fit my SWB and in the process of putting 3 inch stakes on it. Bought the bed for $300 at the local junk yard. Got the local welding shop to make the mounting braces and bolt it it the frame so I can take it off if I need to

Just in the process of building this thing. Got it all mounted up, now I just have to pull it back off to treat the untreated wood.

Here's how I mounted it for now:



I don't know if I'll need more mounting, but If I do I have 4 1 foot lengths of 2" angle iron I'll use to bolt to the frame vertically, then onto the wood.

So far I have just under 300 bucks into all this stuff...

I second no stacks unless its a diesel and then only if its a modded diesel that puts a lot of power (500hp+) to the ground. side exit still looks better as its more modest but still looks great.. just my opinion

The wood bed is a GREAT IDEA!! I have a truck I'm going to be selling that I Imagine would sell a whole lot better if it were a flat bed. I'm Thinking angle iron and wood will do nicely I would have never thought to do it that way.

You could make the frame from some steel and use wood for the deck boards. I was told to do that by some people, but I didn't feel like having to weld a bunch of stuff at the time. So its all wood, baby! If you do it this way, I'd suggest getting all treated wood, as things will go alot faster and you won't have to deal with sealing it.

The all wood beds go together pretty fast, so it's probably a 1 day project if you have all the stuff you need.

I would look for a used commercial flatbed - already set up with brackets and holes in the right locations. Also, in the future it would make an easy dump conversion which is the best flatbed to have. Treated lumber and angle iron and tubing and bolts, etc. add up - you won't save much over a salvaged flatbed. Stacks are awful hot and you need to be careful around them.

I pulled mine out of a junkyard 400.00 and a lot of work but it turned out okay.

That's my '74. I'm debating pulling it and putting it on my '73, if I do I'm going to clean i up, weld on stake pockets so I can add wood sides and repaint maybe with roll-on bedliner...but I kind of like the idea of a stock bed a little better except the price for one in decent shape around here.
