Where can a man get a gas cap for an original non-vented behind the seat tank. I ordered one from lmc for my 67, but it leaks as well. Argh!! What have ya'll done to correct this issue? Thanks in advance and take care.

Don't top off the tank after the pump shuts off. You have to leave a bit of expansion and slosh room. Also I always thought that all of the trucks with seat tanks used vented caps. I may be wrong on that but I don't think so.

71/72 use a vented cap. 67-70 doesn't. Usualy if you can find the stant locking cap that will stop the leak. Those have to be pushed on against a thicker seal to lock. What you need to remember is your tank is over 40 years old and the lip that the dogs of the cap ride on are warn down a little so a thicker seal is needed. WES

Got my locking cap at NAPA, no leaks. It's actually the second one from them.... the rubber in first one eventually rotted, but it had lasted about 20 years or so.

What's worked for me on the older gas tanks is to buy two caps at your local parts store (they're cheap) take the seal off one, add it to the other to create a thicker seal, I have no leaks and it's still going strong. Another option is to remove the rubber seal, carefully add a bead of high temp gasket sealer, let it set and dry, re-add the rubber seal, makes for a nice leak proof seal.

Re: Who makes a non-leaking gas cap??!!

try getting the correct vented cap first as there is a difference in how they seal// most any autopartsstore can get you may have to wait a day or so

they had vented caps thru 70 // 71 72 nonvented with the charcoal cannister thing to vent the tank//that's what i've always been told and seen

Interesting, here in Nevada they made me get a non vented cap to pass smog. So now I am wondering what really was stock vented or non vented?

Re: Who makes a non-leaking gas cap??!!

I just got done with my Sons 69 Long Fleet and its doing the same thing. LEAKS ARE A PAIN IN THE ___!!!!! Gas out all around the cap and down the bed. So I shouldn't need a vented cap for mine??? I aslo want a locking gas cap so this thing doesn't turn into a tanker for the Neighborhood.

There are no leaks with my non vented cap, but if it's warm there is a lot of pressure in there when you take the cap off.

that is dangerous as it can cause an explosion. also longer drives it can setup a vaccume and a fuel starvation issue. i've seen alot of parts changers piss alot of money at that problem when all that was needed was the correct vented gascap

Re: Who makes a non-leaking gas cap??!!

Guess I've been lucky for the last 12 years or so. Time to go get a vented cap or plumb in a canister. Thanks for the info.

Re: Who makes a non-leaking gas cap??!!

I only fill my tank 3/4 full for everyday use. The only time I fill it up is when im on a trip & using it up fast....Keeps down on the spilling out & down the side of the bed

I got one from O,Riles or Checker and I top off my tank to the neck and it does not leak. Check to make sure the neck is not bent.

Re: Who makes a non-leaking gas cap??!!

My 67 has a non vented tank, so it needs a vented cap. The air has to come from somewhere, or the engine stops. If your tank has an extra metal pipe inside the cab, above the fuel fill pipe, you have a vented tank, and don't need the vented cap. Just make sure the vent line is connected to the cannister. No cannister? Plug the metal line, change to a vented cap.

Sometime the seal around the gauge sender is leaking so bad, you can get away with a non vented cap with a non vented tank. This will also leak when you fill the tank. Another good reason not to smoke.

Don't buy the $8 dollar stainless cap. Not because the cap is bad, but because the seal will crack in about 6 months.

Also the $7 seals for the filler neck grommet where it passes throught the cab will crack if left in the sun after about 6 months, and you need to remove the tank to change that.

Does anybody know where to buy good EDPM rubber seals?
