454 performance help

Lookin to drop in my 454 out of my 86 3500 into my 82 k20 truck, lookin for basic upgrades (ie recommendations on intakes, headers, carb maybe). My block says hi preformance on the passenger side by the bellhousing does this mean anything?? Not looking to go crazy just lookin for upgrades, the 4 barrel intake on it is it worth keeping, 4 barrel carb (q-junk??? Dunno) is that worth rebuilding, every time you hit the throttle it stalled it self out we thought it was the fuel pump but filled a 20 soda bottle in a couple cranks of the motor, any help i would appreciate thanks guys

Re: 454 performance help

The engine will have small ports (a.k.a. peanut ports) which are great for torque but not much for top end. They'll pull hard to about 4500 and be out of air by a bit over 5 grand. As long as you're looking for a torquey ride, they're it. Pick a cam with that rpm range and you'll be set. The quadrajet is a good carb, just make sure it's rebuilt by someone that knows what they're doing. If you decide to abandon it, get a Performer intake, it has ports the same shape/size as the peanut port heads. Add a vacuum secondary Holley and get after it. Headers will help quite a bit, use 1 3/4 primaries.

Re: 454 performance help

ok plans have completely changed I am now looking at dropping my 454 into a 2wd I recently acquired had a 396 professionally rebuilt in it guy just wanted the motor I got the truck for under $300 truck is in kinda rough shape body-wise but it adds a truck to the arsenal with racing seats an 4" tach. turbo 400 tranny built "right" with a posi rear end, what are my options for "go fast parts" looking to keep bottom end stock, do I need head work?? What kinda cam you guys running in 2wd?? have a edelbrock performer intake already, an rebuilt my quadrajet lookin for an suggestions, also have removed the emissions restrictive manifolds, what headers are guys running??
