Cut coils suck........do it right
well I got home after hitting a couple pot holes and looked under my truck to find one coil sitting side ways in between the arms.So today I pulled the cut coils and installed the 3" cpp drop coils the PO gave me with the truck. It raised her up a bit but no more danger, bottoming crap. The PO had told me he had the cpp coils but could not afford the drop spindles and cutting was the way to get the stance he wanted. this is no excuse ,do it right. drop spindles in the
the new temp stance.....not bad at all they just fell out when I jacked her up Last edited by 63 & 64 Bowties; 09-15-2010 at 06:00 AM. Reason: language edit & WTB by non-sub member |

Re: Cut coils suck........do it right
Those look really short! It's not surprising they fell out. Any idea how much shorter than the CPP springs they are?

Re: Cut coils suck........do it right
The springs will probably settle a little bit after you drive it around a while. I've never been against cutting coils, but there is a limit to how far is safe. Seems to me the po exceeded that limit by quite a bit. Cutting coils was pretty much the only way to lower vehicles for years before the aftermarket caught up. I've been rolling on cut coils on the front of my Camaro for about 4 years now, have had no issues at all, and I drive that car hard. But then again I only cut 1 full coil out of it, so not much was changed beyond the ride height.

I've never had a problem with cut coils. Just don't go too far.

Re: Cut coils suck........do it right
your right I also have run cut coils in many cars & trucks over the years without problems, you just can't cut too much.....don't let looks override engineering. and sorry for the "foul language" ..I just thought anything they say on prime time TV would be ok here..

Re: Cut coils suck........do it right
I wish more would read this thread... while there's nothing wrong with cutting a little off the coil, there does come a point where you can cut to much.
Keep safe out there guys!

Re: Cut coils suck........do it right
1-coil max can be safely cut. More than that is asking for trouble....

Re: Cut coils suck........do it right
I have cut coils on three differant 64-66 trucks and have NEVER had an issue. but you do have to relocate your shock mounts so your shock wont open so much, plus your shock wont bottom out...Plus you have to install them right...the Cut part on top NOT BOTTOM...theres a spot on the lower control arm where the spring pocket is..they ride just fine..i worry more about the oil pan .......lol

Re: Cut coils suck........do it right
Along those lines, the PO on my truck used those coil compressor clamps, all he did was ruin a set of srpings, I replaced them with new ones once I got them off, the spings were clamped so tight they kept the curve in them even after they were removed.
