Re: whats the best engine paint
If I remember correctly the VHT cans actually recommend that you don't primer it first. If there is someone who is on has a can nearby can verify, I don't have any cans at the moment.

Re: whats the best engine paint
Here's a link that describes recommended practice for application of VHT. No suggestion to use primer, just make sure everything it clean. Engine enamel is the second section:

Re: whats the best engine paint
i've used vht primarily - and the best results I have gotten were after hot tanking when I had machine work done - then PRE prep (Eastwood metal prep) and then spraying multiple thin coats with no primer. seemed to work pretty well on the block and heads and pan, etc. As for other painted (but not block color) things in/on the engine - I really like the Eastwood selection fo stuff (aluma blase, spray gray, etc etc) - they look pretty correct and hold up better than bare metal.

Re: whats the best engine paint
POR is fantastic. I have used it on numerous engines. I used it last on my 72 daily driver. 4 years later, still looks brand new.

Re: whats the best engine paint
Boat, spray or rattlecans?
you didn't say what level of disassembly you're at or willing to go to. The best of course is to lift the engine out and remove things down to a long block, degrease well, use some CLR on any bare iron, then spray with automotive paints: a wash primer works well on bare cast and steel and a simple single stage color, mixed to your choice. If you have air and a spray gun you can handle this, even at novice level. The local paint supplier can set you up, and your body/collision center can too. Otherwise, your talking rattle cans. Re: whats the best engine paint
If you're set up with spray equipment, I've also read that any catalyzed acrylic enamel or urethane can provide show quality results, although for many this may be overkill.

Re: whats the best engine paint
I have had very good luck with VHT rattle can. Their high temp paint is the only brand rattle can I have had any luck keeping on high heat diesel exhaust manifolds. Even the POR high heat paint doesn't work as well as the VHT high heat paint.

Re: whats the best engine paint
painted in `03, looks the same today, just two coats of industrial stainless enamel, no primer, block had been scrubbed with redstar grease remover and hot water before painting, as long as all reminants of grease and oil are gone, the paint will stay.
