Re: What sealant to use on differential housing?
Here's the GM p/n for the factory 12-bolt differential cover gasket:
15634848 [Assuming you can still get them.]

Re: What sealant to use on differential housing?
I'd use a gasket if I could as well. Does the top one in the link look right?

Re: What sealant to use on differential housing?
NAPA's p/n .~...13391 looks closest. The "tell" is the 12 bolt holes. It would be easier to eyeball if they displayed the gaskets in the orientation they work in, not symmetricaly vertical, but to someone laying out a catalog [who's probably never even changed their own oil] I guess it made sense. In real life, the "fat side" is on the drivers side.
Oh yeah, in regard to the original question, I am going to use RTV Ultra Blue, since it's supposed to be oil-proof.

Re: What sealant to use on differential housing?
I done some slight work on the pan (one small ding) after cleaning. Installed a gasket (none used before) used some black RTV designed for differentials (so it said on the package). Refilled after a rattle can on the cover in a light silver so I can keep an eye on it. I'll spray it back black after a while. Car show tomorrow see how it acts. Thanks for everyones input..

Re: What sealant to use on differential housing?
That's good stuff. I use it on both sides of the L6 header/intake gasket.
