79 Suburban on CL

I found this ad, and went to look at it this weekend. Took a few photos just in case my interest peaked more. They have receipts showing an engine overhaul about 15k ago, but it was dated 1998, claims it has sat for the most part during the last 10 years. It is a big block and has all the original equipment as far as A/C and such, even has the cat under it still. Interior was fairly decent for a truck of its age, I can't get past the vinyl though, big turn off for me.

Re: 79 Suburban on CL

The biggest drawback I found on it, the owner tried to paint it himself. No body work was done, painted right over every dent, crease, window molding/gasket and area of rust. The rust is minimal for its age, but it is present on the quarters and a few areas at the roof line in the door jambs. Funny part is, the paint is several months old, but still 'sticky'. I've shot enamel without hardner before and it dries in a few days, no idea if he used urethane single stage and didn't get enough catalyst or what, but it'd have to be stripped. Plus it looks like it was a nice maroon color down the middle before.

I guess maybe if it was a 1/2 ton I'd give it more thought, I liked the idea of a round light suburban lowered, but I really don't want to hassle with the 3/4 suspension and such.

The old man kept saying how "$2400 seems like a lot to most guys for a truck like this...", but the CL ad showed $1800. So I did not even want to risk ticking him off with an offer of $1000, so I just thanked him for letting me look at it and left with my photos.

Re: 79 Suburban on CL

That guy really thinks he has gold in that burban. But in reality, it's maybe worth the price of the engine. For that kind of change, you can pick up a really good one. I mean even here in the salt belt, there are 2wd going for over $2k and 4x4's going over $3K that have been on CL for a long time because people think they got something that they really don't. He has just made more work for whoever buys it by painting it, and not repairing anything. Even at $1800 IMO I think that's way out of the ball park. A good deal for both parties IMO would be anywhere from $800 to $1200.

And just from the picture, did he paint all over the front end of the truck? I can definitely tell he did on the bent bumper, but can't judge the grill and lights.

Tons of overspray, like he masked it up with 12" paper or something.

He said he'd paint yours for $250 Joe, materials and labor and all! Heckuva deal if you ask me.
