Converting to 4WD
i have plans for building a Flat bed Hauler out of my newly purchased 2WD 86 Crew Cab.
but i would really like to have it converted to 4WD because i will proberly come into situations where i would need it with this heavy truck like wet grass, mud or snow but i would like to keep the the stock 2wd hight maby even lower it some so going to a solid front axle Dana 60 or 70 is proberly out of the question so i thinking the K3500 88-98 trucks had Indy Front suspension with CV Half Shafts, could i take the complete suspension and move it over to my 86 chassie or would i be better of buying a 88-89 Chassie and mod the cab mounts for my cab? because then i would also have ABS brakes also building a frame from the ground up has also been a though whats your thoughs on this would i even need the 4wd? ![]()

Re: Converting to 4WD
I'm sure it can be done. GM made millions of 88-98 crew cab 4x4s just to be hacked! Go for it.

Re: Converting to 4WD
I would say the easiest would be to swap the frames and make your own body mounts. That's probably the cheapest also. But then I hate IFS and would always pick a solid axle over it with out even blinking.

Re: Converting to 4WD
i would too but i just think the solid front axle would make it too high, top heavy and cant take lowered carsntrucks

Re: Converting to 4WD
You can make a solid axle ride very low. I have seen 4x4 drag trucks that were on the ground, you just have to fab up some front end parts. Grab you a Dana 60 and a N.P.205 and go for it.

Re: Converting to 4WD
Put in an Inline 6 diesel and mount it all the way over to one side.... hopefully the diff would clear the oil pan then.

Re: Converting to 4WD
My dad lives where it snows like crazy and is always muddy, his former custom bad ass 76 2wd is now a workhorse and he gets by without having 4wd with the correct tire. He bought some tires with crazy deep lugs for the back and is just fine.
