Re: Rear end I.D. ??
That's an HO52. It's commonly referred to as an "Eaton" however I believe it is an Eaton-type rear that was manufactured by GM.
They're good rears from what I can tell by reading. Some 4-wheelers still use them. The most "highway" ratio that was available was 4.10 (although there's reports of custom made 3.90s around at one time) so that limits their appeal to a lot of people. They were available with posi ("No-spin") and those are desirable. I don't know how to tell the posi by looking at it. I have one in my C20 and I'm sticking with it...

I like these rears. They are strong, last almost forever, and IMO are easier to work on than the 14 bolt which replaced them. Their only real disadvantage is the 4.10 gearing, but if you have an overdrive transmission there is no good reason not to use one.

Re: Rear end I.D. ??
Any way to tell if this is a posi from these pics? I can't turn the rear over...

Does not look like a posi to me and you would have to pull the carrier out and split it to actually see inside of it(however it has been awhile since I messed with one).. They are strong rear ends but seem to be a p.i.t.a. to find brake parts for.

To find out for sure, you will need to lift one wheel off the ground. Make sure that the parking brake is off, if it has one, and that the driveshaft is either disconnected or free to turn. If the wheel will turn by hand, you have an open rear. Even if you can't turn it, there should still be some free play in the wheel. If yours won't move at all, the brake shoes may be frozen to the drum. The only way to find out then would be to get the drum off. Ray |

Re: Rear end I.D. ??
That oil looks like mud. Ick.
It looks like an open diff to me. In the last picture, there's a window in the carrier just below the ring gear. It looks like there are spider gear teeth in that window. If so, it's definitely an open diff. If the window has shiny steel in it, it's a Detroit No-Spin (aka Detroit Locker). FWIW, they never put a posi in these rear ends; only a locker.
