Bed weight?

I am looking to get an idea of what a LWB with steel floor weighs? I am getting ready to remove mine with my cherry picker to work on my truck and the weight on the picker i don't beleve to be a problem, but i do have to do this in my side yard with damp ground so i am just wanting to make sure i have proper support under the cherry picker so i can roll the bed back away from the frame without having to stop, set the bed back down and make an stronger wood floor . I read here that 4 guys can lift one so i'm guessing maybe 300-400lbs. am i close? or is it around 600+? If its around 6-800 then i think i'll need toi reinforce the setup i made.. Thanks.

I have some crates to set it on.

I'm not sure why but right after i unbolted the cab and radiator supports ( in the process of changing them out) i fired up the truck and did a little jockying around and the truck started making a weard ratteling noise that i have not pinpointed just yet, my first thought was that the fan might be hitting the radiator shrowd, but now i'm thinking that the unbolting of the cab has releaved the compression of the cab mounts enough and its probably binding the transmission linkage enough to cause the trany to make the noise, i have not had time to investigate just yet but hoping to tomorrow. I suppose i could just rebolt the mounts and give it a try too.

Actually i was just hoping to pull the bed and get it out of the way quickly before i start lifting the cab, I know the trans linkage has to be unhooked among other things. I have to lift the cab with jacks and use spacer blocks between it and the frame because i'm confined to having 2) 10X20 canvas car covers tied together end to end as my work area on the side of my house, no room to approach the side with my cherry picker.

Re: Bed weight?

Thanks I got it off and i did take your advice and fire up the truck and back it up within my work envelope, then lifted and drove out from under it, made things much easyer. I didn't have the rattle this time but my fan blade is currently within 1/8 of the bottom of the shrowd, it has been hit by the fan blade.

I have a rear gas tank comming and as you can see i have a little work ahead of me, the rear bumper is solid allright, but its welded to the frame and cross member! I have to cut it off with a grinder and thin cutting wheel then probably need to move the crossmember to fit the tank, we'll see that when it gets here. rear exhaust pipes are also in the way.

Re: Bed weight?

Whats going on guys...

Be carefull with the engine jack, it's man made, it took 5 Mexicans to lift my bed, that included myself...

Is my truck a real short bed ? I was doing some body work on it and noticed that my Vin tag does not match my glove box tag, my vin is ce134zz51521 and the one on the glove box is from a chevy, the model number says it's a long bed... ohh my title says GMC and so does everything else on the truck,lol...

Thank you all for your help ! ! !

Re: Bed weight?

you got an air compressor out there?
-if so, use a cut-off wheel in a die grinder to cut an X in the top of the rivet and then use air chisel to drive the weakened head off, then simply knock the rest of the rivet through the hole. They suck even this way, but 100 times easier than trying to remove with a hammer and chisel! Good luck!

Why don't ya post the info in a new thead and title it "vin check" or "what do i have" or something like that, that way someone will read the title and be able to offer you some help.. I don't know a lot about vin numbers

Hi Mike, i have one of the 25 gal Sears jobs that isn't enough to run a die grinder in more than short spurts, I have an air chisel but not sure if it works (it was a freebie thats been in my tool box forever) so will check into it. but i can get it done if need be.. Thanks for the tip!

If you move a cross member do ya just use grade 8 bolts to re attach it?

Re: Bed weight?

my dad did some rivets on a 49 willys by sanding the top flat then drilling through it. but those were probably smaller then yours are but maybe worth the shot?

Re: Bed weight?

I have a 4 1/2" grinder. I would grind the head off. Sometimes the rivets are tight in the hole so they don't come out easily. If you drill a small hole into the rivet (1/8") to a depth the thickness of the frame and crossmember it can relieve the tension. Then drive it out with a punch.
